If it's brown and stinks, it's prolly time for a re-build already. Something (Internal leak, bad tv adjustment, ect...) allowed frictions to slip. Once they start slippin and burning up, its too late to do much about it.

My fluid was light brown (probably just oxidized) and did not smell. I changed it about 6k ago and it is still red. It has a Transgo kit, servo, boost valve, 3-4 upshift sleeve, tci cooler and I couldnt be happier with it. But i'll start getting nervous when i bolt on the slicks.

its not a really distinct smell like burning or nothing but the fluid does smell funny and the fluid is a bit different shade than the what it looks like new. And when you say its slipping how can you tell if your tranny is slipping?

ur tranny is slipping when u go to shift and it has a hard time. like u start in first from a stop and u shift into second at 4500 rpm, the tranny should go into 2 second with little delay and u should be ready to hit the gas some more to get second gear up to like 4500 and then shift into drive with little delay. Slipping is bad, any bad delay should be fixed. The tranny should shift gears when u actually shift them, not when it wants to.

my car too seems to have lost some snap to it. granted, its only a 305, but it doesn't seem to have the pick up it used to. i advanced the timing a little bit, and did a tune up. im wondering too if the tranny is at fault. as far as i know the fluid and filter have never been replaced. will doing this help me get some of the power back?

Well if the fluid is dirty (dark in color) and/or smells like burnt something, i would change the fluid and filter. As far as the tranny goes does it change gears nice and smooth and firmly?
Hows ur gas mileage? does ur motor hesitate or miss?

well it shifts fine, its just a little "squishy" sometimes. gas mileage seems to have dropped. tranny doesnt slip or anything likethat. the motor has a tendency to hesitate but it never misses.
