T-5 stronger than I think?
T-5 stronger than I think?
OK I hear that my T-5 world class can put up with more torque than the origional T-5. The question is how much? Can I get away with a 350 TPI, or LT1 and still use the T-5? (I'm dirt poor) I pend all my funding on my IROC-Z because it's perfect and I love it. (need a girl)

Yeah, the world class T5 can handle more power, but its still nothing to admire. Its something like 305 ft lbs I think. Not much at all.
I've seen some guys running a T5 behind a 350 hp motor for years and it was fine. But there are guys with v6s breaking them. Its all in how you treat it. Will it hold a 350 TPI? Maybe a stock one. An lt1? I don't think so. It definitely wouldn't last very long.

i have a t-5 behind my TPI 350 and have no problem. As long as you dont abuse it and u kno how to drive it will be fine. On monday my car is goin in for my new 350 and headers to be installed. ill keep u guys updated on how the trans reacts to a better working engine, im sure it will be fine. plus i see these kids around with mustangs and they are pushin out my horses than me and there trans are fine. i say go for the 350 tpi! YOU LOVE IT!

I have a 300 HP 350 in front of my WC T5, but don't expect it to last long.Like the other guys said, it's really all about how you treat it.Personally, I drive pretty hard most of the time and destroyed my T5 once before with the stock 305.So far, it's holding up (about 6 months w/ 350) but it's getting noisier and shifting harder, so it may last until fall, but I doubt it.
If you're easy on it (no banging second gear or dumping the clutch with sticky tires) it'll work. Just don't expect to be able
to "drive it like you stole it" because it will grenade!

Dam, I just noticed that I contradicted myself. I meant to say that if you rag on the tranny, don't expect it to hold up tothe lt1.

92 Blue was right, the World Class is rated for 305ft/lbs. They will hold up to a 350, just make sure you have a good clutch like a Centerforce II, and always shift with your clutch. I developed the very bad habit of shifting without my clutch, and have eaten a few synchros. However the old T-5 is still holding together behind my TBI 350. But if you have the money, the Tremec TKO (525ft/lbs) or a aftermarket T-56 (550ft/lbs) would be killer. I couldn't imagine a cooler transmission in a 3rd gen Camaro than the T-56 6 speed.

Centerfarce isnt a good clutch.
My T5 blew up two passes after I ran the time in my sig. It grenaded third gear... Pics available on request.
If anything, the TPI will wreck a T5 sooner than an LT1 will. The TPI puts out a heck of a lot more torque than an LT1, and its torque that breaks parts, not horsepower.

370 ain't that much i was hopin for 400 but i need better heads. with a big cam, intake, carb, decent heads 370 or around there is not a problem out of a 350.u just gotta know how to match parts. and with full ignition and headers and exhaust.

Hey,
Hey Kevin, I need a clutch.. Hows your McLeod holding up??
Will it work with hydraulics??
..And to answer the post..
I've run the same T5 for a few years now, mostly 1/4 mile passes at the drag on slicks. It held up fine before the blower.. (around 410hp) but I've only made a few passes with the blower.
I run 10W30 in my T5.. You're suposed to run ATF, but I find the 10W30 keeps it a little cooler.
Whatever you do don't run gear oil in it, or you'll see almost immediate syncro failure.

I killed mine
Well Mine is Killed, I got a 350hp 350 Edelbrock Crate motor mounted up to my T-5 and I beat the **** out of it and it killed the tranny to ****, so now I am swapping back to an automatic, people just need to face it. The automatic transmission is much better for drag racing and taking the abuse, they have been using them for years in the pro circuts of the NHRA.
We all need a good Muncie tranny in our Cars.

Or a Borg-Warner Super T-10 like the one in my '79 Z28(OK so it's not a third gen)with a Hurst Ram Line shifter behind a 350 horse 350.It's been shifted at 6200 many times...no problem.I suppose you could fit one into a third gen, there are a lot of them around.

I called McLeod, and talked to the owner, Red. The guy is crazy..
He told me I need a iron disc, pressure plate, alum flywheel, bellhoising, upgraded hydraulics, etc.. He said it would be around $1700.00 for everything.
I think thats a little excessive.
