Ya know how, when you're accelerating, the tach drops suddenly but the car keeps gaining speed?? That's the trans changing gears. Start from a dead stop, accelerate to a safe highway cruising speed, and count how many times the tach drops...that's how many gears your trans has.

its a four speed. My olds cierra was the only car that i owned that had a trans that had gears differing from the numbering on the dash (the prev. owner put a four speed in). To the left of "D" was overdrive, to the right was drive. Really f'd with people i loaned the car to... they could never figure how to get it into drive

thats a four speed also but its alot stronger than the 4l60-E. Rated for engines with up to 440 ft-lbs of torque. I think the 4l60-e is just 350 ft-lbs.

Sometimes people think the lock up converter is another gear.

y hasnt anyone built and installed 5 or 6 speed manuals in stock cars from the factory? would they juss simply be too big and too heavy? It just seems to me that the more gears you have the more acceleration and economy u can have with the OD gears and stuff.

Allison is a transmission manufacturer, they build transmissions for semi trucks, buses, tanks.... All heavy duty transmissions. Those com in anywhere from 3 speeds up to 9 or 10 speeds IIRC.

GM put the 4L80E in 92 & up 3/4 & 1 ton trucks with gas engines & all light duty trucks with 6.5L diesel engines. In 2001 GM debuted the new Duramax diesel. It comes with a special Allision built 5 speed auto trans.

6 Speed Auto

I believe that Jett makes a 6 speed trans. I believe that they use the 4L60 or the 4L60E and stuff a few new gears between the ones already there. Check out their site.

He might not have had the trans installed when he asked the question.
