I plan on rebuilding my 91' 700R4 in the near future and would like to get a good rebuild book to look through so I can get an idea of what to expect once I start tearing it down. What books do you guys recommend??

GM factory service manual. I used an '88, but also had a 96. The 96 was more 1 picture per step. All pictures in the later manuals are 3d, whereas the 88 used more section views. The way all gm manuals are laid out are as follows:
Disassembly only to the point of sub-assemblies
For reassembly, start with a sub-assembly, dis-assemble it for rebuild, reassemble it, install it, go on to the next subassembly.
Both early & late manuals identify all parts with a refrence number, so its easy to mark or bag the parts by refrence number. That way, even if you haven't learned the part's name, you'll always be able to identify the part & tie it back into the shop manual's instruction steps. I highly recommend the gm manuals.

Your refering to a 1996 edition correct?? How many pages is the manual, and what was the price you paid?

Review the topic "Where can I buy a spring compressor tool..." posted on 05-28-02. It includes a lot of "homemades" ideas with some pictures not included in books.

My mistake. The late modle manual was a 1998, entitled Unit Repair Manual, all passenger car & light duty truck. I have volume 1 of 2. The GM # on the book is GMPT/98-TURM-1. I got this from a friend, & it really describes a 4l60E trans, which is very similar to the 700r4. However, I would recommend getting a manual for your exact model year. A 700r4 & 4L60 has enough differences that you might get confussed. I bought my '88 manual at a swap meet for ~$30. I think you can buy new manuals from Helm, Inc., but they will cover the entire car & be pretty expensive.

Isnt't the 4L60 the newer version of the 700R4?? The tranny I'm planning on rebuilding is out of my 91' Camaro. Wouldn't mine be the 4L60??

I priced the Helm's manual and it's $90 bucks plus the 6 for shipping. How big is this manual??

I believe the 4L60 trans came on the scene starting with 1993 model year, according to a trans parts catalog I have.
The 98 manual I mentioned is about 2 -1/2" thick , 500 pages?? & covers all gm powertrains for that year, besides the 4L60. You're probably better off with the shop manual for your model year, which covers all aspects of your car.
