Drive Shaft loose in Tail shaft
Drive Shaft loose in Tail shaft
forgive me for not being familiar with transmission terms.. so please bear with me..
got a 88 350/TPI/Auto/700r4/3.27 rear... it is leaking transmission fluid out of the rear of the tranny where the drive shaft comes in (tail shaft?)
... and the drive shaft itself seems to be very loose..
... as in it can move a few inches around in a circle...
how much play is that suppose to have?
what is holding that into the transmission? it is a slip fit... right?
a guess that we've come up with is the bushing and seal need to be replaced... is this on the right track?
anyone else have this problem before?
on a side note.. the car seems to have some vibrations coming from the rear when in higher rpms... could this be the cause?
any help on this topic would be appreciated... :hail:

A worn bushing would not give a few of inches of play. The bushing is only about an 1/8" thick. If this is true, you have other problems.

I just brought my '89 IROC With 700R4 Tranny to the shop a few days ago for the excat same thing. They told me that the driveshaft yoke, that goes into the tail shaft, was twisted and this sheared off part of the bushing. They are swapping out both the yoke and bushing this week.

I had a lot of work done, but they broke it down for me. The parts and labor for replacing the yoke and bushings and seals between the drivesahft and tranny tailshaft came out to $243.00. You don't want to know what the rest of the bill was. Yikes!!! Hope this helps.

No problem. I brought the car in to have some struts, strut mounts, wheel bearings, brake rotors and calipers replaced. I also wanted them to check on the mystery drip in my driveway that appeared overnight. They found the drip was coming from the driveshaft yoke\Tailshaft area. They found the yoke was twisted and warped a little and it tore up the driveshaft bushing in the tailshaft. The bill was a little scary that I just got for all the work that they completed, but for the driveshaft yoke problem that you and I are reffering to, it was right around $243.00. The rest of the bill for the other work was a little bit more than that.
Good luck. BTW, Goodyear Gemeni does great work near where I live. I don't know if you have one in your area, but ya may want to check.
