Hey, I'm new at this so this might just be how the tranny is, but when i really run my car hard it holds second unless i lift on the pedal and the same with third. It holds them way higher than it should, and it's really slowing the car down in the quarter. What is wrong, do I need a shift kit? more fluid? new tranny?

it might have to do with your computer and when it tells the tranny to shift- is this in regular drive or overdrive?

Start here: To adjust the TV Cable skip the book method and do this: Press the 'D' shaped lock button on the adjuster and loosen the cable setting (The black housing that the metal cable is in will move forward). Now, have someone floor the gas pedal while you check to see if the throttle plate is open all the way. Usually they are off a little and will wiggle. Do whatever you have to do to get it open solid. Now, with the pedal still floored, press the 'D' button and pull the cable casing (the black tube) back as hard as you can (putting maximum tension on the metal cable) and release the button. You now have the engine, tranny and gas pedal all in sync at WOT. Mark the cable casing so if for some reason it gets moved you can know where to put it again. The problem with the 'self adjust method' is that it bends things and puts them permanently out of whack. It is also the full TV setting, which is theoretically what the GM method does.

Now if that made no difference you may have the wrong Governor/calibration for your vehicle. The ECM only controls L/U. If your WOT shift points are OK then go with heavier springs on the Governor weights.

Can you clarify that a little? How do I go about fixing "the wrong Governor/calibration"? And "The ECM only controls L/U" What is the L/U? WOT is when it shifts weird like that, if you read the first post "when i really run my car hard".

P.S. I already did the TV cable adjustment exactly like your guide, shifts at part throttle are firmer, but I still have the same problem at WOT.

OK so if the WOT shifts are too late then it could be one of two things: A) the Band and 3-4's could both be somewhat burned or even the Forwards, dragging the shifts out or B) you need a slightly heavier weighted Governor, or there is a problem in the Governor circuit, such as wear. L/U is Lock Up, as in Torque Converter Clutch.

Now I see yo have a V-6 so you could try a V-8 Governor from a standard use 700 (not a Z-28). That will definately lower your WOT shift points. It may be too much but it is a start. There are also Governor calibration kits that are more flexible to tailor the WOT and part throttle shifts but it is more work.

Well the long second is something to work on, but if its a 700r4 auto and you don't have any kind of shift kit that allows it you cannot go into 4th or Over drive at wide open throttle. It will kick down to third every time. So that is half of the problem.
