Not sure if i have 2.77 or 3.27 rear-end?
I've done research on the net, and some show my year to have the 3.27, and some say 2.77. I thought 3.27 were standard on 1987 GTA with a 350. But now i'm not sure. Is there anyway to find out for sure. I mean i know there is, but an easy way.
I doubt the car will have it labeled anywhere. Would the VIN number show me?

If not not, any other way to find out for sure?

Check out the tech data of Thirdgen's homepage. The 3.27 gears is standard for the 87 GTA with the 350. My 3.27 gear with rear disc brake came from a 87 Trans AM GTA 350 TPI. Its going on a 92 Firebird 305 TBI soon to be a 350 with a LT4 cam rated at 300HP.

get the rear end off the ground enough for the back tires to spin. make sure the car is in neutral.(BLOCK THE FRONT TIRES!!).. with a peice of chalk, mark the tire and the body. have someone else hold the tire to make sure it doesnt move and crawl under the car and do the same to the driveshaft.one everything is marked, have your partner rotate the tire, and count how many times it takes for the driveshaft to make 1 revolution. if its close to 3 but not completely 3, then you have a 2 series, if its over 3, then you have a 3 series.
hope this helps

You do have a 3.27 rear in your GTA.
I have owned and dismantled many Firebirds. The 350 87's all had the 3.27.
There should be a tag that is bolted (riveted) to the housing that would tell you the gear ratio. You just have to get under the car and look for it.

GTATransAM,nice car dude I got a friend of mine who has the exact car and color except its a 88 with a LT1 motor put in it. Man I have the slowest car so far but before Christmas I should have my new 350w/LT4 cam and I'll really be smoking tires.

To bad fall and winter coming up, it will be back to my 93 grand prix until next spring
But hey its the best way to garage it.Thats gonna be awesome when u get that 350. U should keep it "RS" looking to make it more of a sleeper, not that your car is slow, but hey you;ll hang with the 350 guys even though they dont think u can, that'll be fun. Good luck with that!
U doing the engine swap yourself, or u getting it done somewhere?

I'm getting someone elso to do it for me and I will do the tweaking for top performance cause I too busy with work while spending time with my 2 years old girl. But ,in the meanwhile, I'm getting ready to slap on my 3.27 rearend and enjoy the disc brakes. LOL
