First time rear gear change.
Is it easier to remove the whole axle from under the car, to do a really good job at changing gears including testing tollerances?
I've planned on removing the axle this weekend, but if it's unnecessary???

i would take the axle out, cuz then you don't have to lay on your back to do everything, unless of course you have a lift, in that case you might as well leave it in, since you could stand under the car

Son of a *****, hell in a hand basket.
Three words 'Torque Arm Bolts' !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
45 Minutes with a 1/2 Craftsman Impact Wrench with axle in the driveway!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The nuts on the top came off easy, but I couldn't get the bolts out, so I pulled the whole deal out from under the car. I guess 21 years of rust welded it tight, but I showed it who it's daddy is

I can see why, hell If I didn't need to do another one for 100,000 miles, I would throw it all in a box and take it to a machine shop. let them deal with the bearings.
Is that still being to Independent

i guess i'm like tim on tool time ,the more tools i have the better i like it. if i do something and need a tool i buy it, if i see where a tool will make things easier for me i buy it. hell right now my main tool box is top, middle, bottom, and side plus 2 other bottoms for a total of 6 boxes all snap on plus a top and bottom craftsman i keep my precesion stuff in and drills and taps. i've got a small lathe in the garage along with mig, tig, and stick welders and 3 sets of oxy acetline bottles, valve grindeing machines, and a lot of other stuff. and i'm just a hobbiest, not professional, i do a little for other people and build a few engines each year.
