9 bolt maintenance

the posi in my 9bolt loosened up some time ago. Since i need to rebuild my rear calipers i would like to take the posi apart and inspect it and tighten up the posi unit. What parts do i need to do this, i would like to take it all apart only once!!! I really don't want to get too far into it, like bearings. but i would like to change the axel seals, fluid and fix the slipping. Can anybody tell me what parts to order? I get the gararge for just a weekend at a time so if i don't have what i need, i'll have to put it all back.

I'd talk to Miles at diffsolutions.com.

I'm in the process of doing the same research and I'll jet you know what I find.

As far as the posi additive goes, I put it in when I changed my fluid and my posi is quiet. Miles will tell you to put it in, but others will tell you to leave it out. It's an ongoing debate.

Hey Laiky, I just picked up and '88 factory service manual that covers the rebuilding of the 9 bolt posi. Want me to copy the sheets and send 'em your way?

Lemme know...Ed

I just talked to a friend of mine who runs his own shop. He is going to look into a rebuild kit for the posi (new clutches and steels). Quoted me about 2-2.5 hours labor to do the job too.

I thought that sounded reasonable.

Cones are still considered clutches technically, just not friction/steel disk style.

All the rebuild parts you need are at www.9bolt.com

Thanks for clearing that up Miles. I probably used the wrong terminology, but the unit can be rebuilt correct?
That's the point I was getting at.

Yes. I will be getting copies of the rebuild sheets from the '88 GM service manual out to those who request them.

just to add some info.....

I sell all different thicknesses in shims. I just sold some .030 and some .018 shims to a very happy customer. he loves the .030

I also have the thinner thicknesses as well.

I rebuilt my 9-bolt with a .005 on one side and a .008 on the other side just to bring it back to factory spec. if I pull it apart again, I will go tighter.

I haven't forgotten you guys...it took me a while to get them ready to send, and it's a BIG file...11MB of word document. I wanted to make sure you could read the sheets good.

I'll start sending them tonight.
