Need Help Fast
ok guys this past Tuesday i went to put in the used posi i got, well i took off the rear cover unbolted the caps, pulled the axles out and then i put the posi in reverse of install, well when i got it in i bolted it up and spun the tires, THEY JUST SPUN, the posi fit perfectly, but the axles were too small. So i took it back apart put the ring gear back on the old standard carrier. And bolted everything back up. I filled it up eith 80/90 gear oil, and proceded to drive down the street and i was greeted with the most awful whine ive ever heard. WHAT could be the problem, and i already know it has enough oil. And trust me this is not a normal whine it is incredibly loud, and it drowns out all other sounds. Now i called a local transmisson place and the guy told me that i may have put the shims on either side ot the bearing races on the wrong side. IS this possible? are they different sizes? also how do you tighten down the caps that go over the races> what is there torque specs? ANY HELP IS GREATLY APPRICIATED! pleae help quickly because i cant drive my car.

The shims are selective fit, otherwise they wouldn't be needed at all. If you put them in on the wrong sides, you would either have WWWAAAAYYYY too much backlash, or the gears would be totally smashed together. Sounds like your rear fits the first description. DO NOT DRIVE THE CAR until you put it back together right, you WILL trash your gears very quickly like that.
Also, sounds like the posi you got is for 28-spline axles
but you have a 86 car which has the 26-spline axles
so you need a pair of axles. Good luck: you either have to destroy the value of a hard-to-find rear end to get them which usually means find a junk rear at the boneyard and pay for the whole thing and just leave behind everything else, or buy new ones at about $125 apiece.
