700r4 Tranny problems

I bought my camaro about two months ago with 120k on it. The tranny went out 6 days later, I replaced it with another 700r4 and now (10 days later) the new one went out.... it had plenty of fluid but of course it was burnt. any advise or suggestions???

Did you hook up the cooler lines? I realize this is a dumb question. Was the new transmission you put in "new/Rebuilt" or was it from a wrecking yard? Can you provide a little more info. Thanks

Allright, so the 'new' transmission i put in wasnt new, yes, it was from a wrecking yard. You have to understand im a 17 year old on a budget so i was looking for the cheapest route. But as to your other question yes i did hook up the cooling lines, and everything else to my knowledge. Even though it was from a wrecking yard it was a community yard and known for good used tranmissions, so i was wondering what else could have made them both go out so quick. thanks for the help.

Dude, make sure the throttle valve cable gets adjusted correctly and is not bound up. If it is either, it could ruin your transmission. Also, they call em junk yard trannies for a reason....

warrantee

I bought a tranny out of a wrecking yard and its great...they give a 30 day guarantee...call the yard and ask them if they have anything like that with theirs.

That is why the transmission is in the wrecking yard. If you are going to buy one from this place, first look and smell the fluid to see its condition, if it looks and smells ok, then drop the pan and see if there is much metal on the magnet (1/4 to a 1/3 teaspoon). See if there is a black coating (very fine powder) on the bottom of the pan, if there is it is a sign of clutch or band material or both. If there is very little or none of this material, you might stand a chance.

thanks for the advice, i guess i knew all of that but didnt think to do it.... i think i am just gonna break down and buy a tranny that will last. of course that means my car will be out of commission until i get the money saved up. Does anyone one know a place where i can get a cheap quality 700r4. the cheapest i can find is around 1100. thanks.

Whatever you do, buy it locally, dont' be tempted by mail order companies, the ones in the back of hotrod or superchevy are the worst. I paid to have a rebuilt 700r4 sent to me from az (i'm in CA) and i got a SMOKING DEAL! It was only 899.99 shipped. However, when it got here, i had it in the car and the car wouldn't move! So a local shop checked it out and said it hadn't been rebuilt at all, only a coat of new paint on the case. Not to mention it took all of 2 months to get to me, and it was supposed to be upgraded with the corvette servo and all the trimmings, turns out the tranny came from a v6 camaro or s10, and nothing had been changed. DON"T BE TEMPTED BY A "GOOD" DEAL. Have a local shop build you one, trust me, if something goes wrong, being able to go and yell at the guy in person is much better than trying to recoup your money from someone in another state(this was ultimately unsuccessful anyway in my case). I'm not sure about the aftermarket companies such as jet and b&m as i haven't had any experience with them, i am referring to those overdrive pro adds.

If the locals could do this I would not have any business at all, I would rather not go and yell at somebody and have what I "paid for" instead. There are very few people who do these units right. As of now, I spend nothing on advertising, and I spend lots of time answering questions, (here, on the phone, other message boards, etc.) I think this is a better way of doing things. I value my reputation above all else.

Well, you are local to some people, i'm saying go with someone who you can physically go see. This was no way aimed at you, and as you describe yourself you aren't in the same category as the scum ball i dealt with (no advertising, is a good thing in my opinion and word of mouth is best). However although you value your reputation, this guy did not, and put out t substandard product. I am sure you build quality things, which also come with quality price tag, there is no problem with getting what you pay for, but i was trying to warn people to avoid the "good deal". Also, don't discount the local guys, i had Valley Transmission here in El Cajon build me a bulletproof unit, with no problems living behind my healthy small block chevelle.
