seriously confused?? please help.

well i called my trans guy today and he says there is no way to reliably build a 700-r4 to handle the abuse 600 horses makes with any parts? i know a few have said they can do it here which is why i'm somewhat confused.

he told be i'm better off going with a th-400? he said he can build this to hold 1,000 no problem and make it so i can use my ratchet shifter with no abuse on the trans.

what are the cost differences here and is this really true? would a 400 be stronger than a 700-r4 and work just as smooth?

why didn't they use this type of trans in the cars from the beginning then?

ummmm it was the 80's, need i say more

lol

seriously, TH400s are stronger.......way stronger

the 4L80E is based off the 400

if i was in your shoes, i would go with the 400

it lacks overdrive, but it doesnt seem like your car is a daily driver

people blow up 700r4's only having a mild 350! (like in the 350 horse range)

i agree you are running a chit load of horse power for the 700r4, but lets see what others think...

alright after sitting down and doing some calculations a 400 is not practicle. i would really like to have a 4th gear for highway type driving.

any suggestions; i'm contemplating a 6 speed although i really want an auto.

this will suck if i have to back down the power just to have an auto and have a car that drives somewhat decent.

If you have the money they sell 2 speed units you can bolt on the end of the th400 or th350 which gives you a 6 speed auto, but they cost alot.

Turbo 350

700R4= Popcorn! I wouldn't sweat the loss of overdrive in your car if you're turning up the engine. The better strength, shifting and the better converters available for the T400 and T350 more than make up for the loss of overdrive. If you turn the engine up, it doesn't want to loaf along at 1950 RPM anymore...in fact it will make better mileage and cruise cleaner if the Rr's are up a bit. You can juggle your gear ratio a bit with tires...depending on rim choice, of course. My preference is the Turbo 350. They're easy to turn up, they fit better than the T400, and they're strong and reliable. I run one myself and build them for customers ( yeah, everybody's squeezin') IMO, GTG EEE

go here:

http://www.700r4.com/

700r4's aren't that great for high hp applications, but they can be made to hold 600 hp.

Go 400 and you wont have to worry Friend of mine has a 700 behind a 500+ hp BBC, so far so good :/ but it's only been driven under 300 miles with about 10 quarter mile passes.

Still need convincing?

Go to one of your local tranny shops and get them to show you the guts! When you see how small some of those pieces are, you will know why they would have trouble hangin' on to any power. The trick with any project is do ALL the Math...total cost involved includes do-overs. First rule of engineering KISS Keep It Simple, Stupid. Enough saidEEE

Kandied, here is a tranny that Phoenix transmission builds. The web site is www.Phoenixtrans.com. I had one of their 700R4s in my 68 Camaro and it was perfect. Anyway, here is what they have listed: not quite 600, but close.
# PT700R4SX This is our strongest version of the 700R4 and is rated at 575 horsepower and 600lbs.TQ. in vehicles up to 3700 lbs. We take all the modifications and upgrades from our PT700R4SS model and add a Billet 2-4 servo assembly, Special Hardened input shaft, Steel reinforced input drum, Steel drum pistons, High Rev spring packs, Hardened and reinforced Reaction Shell, Full needle bearing gear train, and 5 pinion front and rear planetary to make this the strongest 700 money can buy. Comes with our “Torque Max” torque converter in stall speeds up to 2750 rpm. If you can find a tougher combination than this, buy it! $2289.00
