Manual Shifting on Auto Trans

I've heard many people say that too much manual shifting on an auto trans is bad for it. Is this true? And if it is, why? What does it do that's different from normal shifting?

I don't know how bad it is. but you if start from a stop and drop in into first and shift each gear till overdrive you can take it to redline or higher each time. if you just have it in over drive from a stop i think it shifts before red.

I don't know....I've just heard a few people on here say that too much manual shifting after a while will mess up the trans.

As long as it upshifting and very little manual downshifting your probably ok. Adding the largest intermediate reverse boost valve, larger primary boost valve, and Corvette servo would help out some along with the Performance Trans-Go Shift kit.

On the manual downshifting side, ask yourself which is easier to replace: brake pads or clutch packs? I'll take brake pads any day over a trans rebuild.

Well I think more by manual downshifting for racing purposes not for slowing down for like a stop sign or something. The type of driving I do requires alot of upshifting and downshifting. And now my trans went to crap O_o

My car had a 200C in it which died at 100K miles - thankfully that tranny is gone.

I drive the car hard through corners and I used to down shift a lot because I don't like the way an automatic sort of freewheels through corners when it's in drive.

It seems that you can set the chasiss better both into and through a corner with it in a lower gear and some revs on the tach rather coasting through in drive.

Also, at hard lateral g I don't want the tranny to suddenly downshift when I get on the gas thereby unbalancing the car at bad time.

Point being that you have more control when you pick the gear you want and then balance the car on throttle during hard cornering.

I found that by downshifting and then giving it a shot of gas the tranny shift smooth enough. No doubt this contributed to its untimely demise though.

The 200C was very loose shifting even at its best.
What I'm wondering is whether you could shift say a 350C with a shift kit in the same manner I've described without wrecking it because I think a 350C will be my next tranny.

George, i know exactly what you're saying about an auto shifting during a turn. I had a near-death experience in my 86 camaro going around a corner in d on the gas, it downshifted and kicked sideways. I had to use the e-brake to pull it out of it. damn autos!!!

Heh? Your car shifted during a turn causing oversteer. So you used your ebrake to come out of it? The ebrake would cause more oversteer because it would lock up the rear wheels. O_o
