What is the correct way to set the shift stops?(the bolt on the bottom of the shifter? I have left them so they don't even toucj the shifter? They have been like this for years, ut I have only put 1,000 miles on the car in the last 4 years.

If your shifter only has one bolt on the bottom of the unit than you need to put your car into fourth gear, set the stop so that it is just touching the shaft, back it off a quarter turn and than tighten it down. If you have one on top you will do the same thing only with the car in third gear. I just installed a new shifter and I to noticed how the stops were pretty much useless because the shifter is built so well there is almost no slack in the throw.
