Axle movement (in and out)

So i just replaced my rear gears and i've noticed something. Its a BW 10 bolt in a 91 camaro. I replaced my broken 3.43 gear set(broke a pinion tooth) with a 3.73 richmond set. I put it all back together and noticed that the driver side axle moves in and out about 2/10 - 1/4 of an inch. I pulled off the tire and caliper and tried to pull out axle out(to test for the c clip) and it did not pull out, i push it in and it hits the cross pin thingy. The passenger side does not move this much. Is this amount of movement normal? I did a search and a moderator said that as long as the seals work correctly, it is probably within tolerance. Thanks for your help!

Could it be that the C clip is badly worn, allowing the movement?

I had a lot of play in my axles also, then I put the zexel in and now have only about .025 play. My clips were worn about .002 also. I'm not sure if you can get thicker c-clips, but that would definately solve the problem. Might try making a couple of calls to some shops that specialize in rear end work.

Do you still do the custom prom work as listed in your sig? I'm in Vancouver and need some mods made to my bin file.

I've been told, but have no practical experience, that if you flip-flop the C-clip (in board to out board) you'll revearse the wear pattern, thus eliminating play.

I checked my c-clips with a digital micrometer and they were wore about .002. So flipping them didn't do much good for me. The zexel is what me the big difference in my case.

Maybe if your clips were worn bady, flipping them might help, but if they are worn that bad they need to be replaced.

Sounds to me like the carrier isn't shimmed right, and is moved WWWAAAAAYYYYY pver to one side or the other.

How much shim did you use on each side of the carrier? Should be .250" ± .030" or so, each. The axles usually have about 1/16" to 1/8" of end play. .2" seems a bit much, but not enough to let the C-clip fall out, so it's probably not a problem.
