the tranny(700) in my 88' has started to act funky. when then engine is cold i put into reverse to get out of the drive way and then i put it O/D and the car does nothing. i step on the gas, the rpm's come up but the car goes nowwhere. i then proceed to put in Drive and it goes into gear, i move the shifter back into O/D and i proceed normally. i change my tranny fluid @ 10K intervals. it currently has fresh fluid and filter. what could be causing my problem? is my tranny finally dying? thanks guys.

 

The only differences between "(D)" and "D" is the application of the overrun clutches and the inability to shift into 4th gear ("OD", or "(D)" ). So unless you are starting to have foward sprag problems (which is bypassed when put in "D" by the application of the overrun clutches) or the fact that you have a delayed engagement of the foward clutches.

What happens if you put it in "(D)" and leave it there for a bit, will it eventually catch?

 

if i put it in drive when it cold/hot all is good. it will catch immediately. sorry if i didn't word it right . in drive it will shift normally and at the "proper" times. when i move the shifter into o/d (if i first put in drive and then bump back into o/d) it will shift normally as when it's warm/hot. does that explain it a little better?

 

Maybe I didn't word part of my question right. What would happen if on a cold start, you put it in OverDrive and left it there? Would it eventually catch without putting it in Drive first?

 

in o/d it would catch but it takes a long time though. i can rev it a couple times to about 1500 and then it catches a couple of secs later. that last statement was an experiment only. i don't do that evey time it doesn't want to go into gear. i know that it can't be good for it.

 

My original 700r4 did the same thing...in the morning if i put it in OD it would go nowhere. But if i put it in D it worked great. I just always put it in drive, when it was cold. I drove it this way for over 100,000 miles. It shifted great otherwise.

I never did find out the cause of it. I had a mechanic look at it and was told it was just morning sickness.('')

You should let your car warm up anyway

Let the tranny warm up while the engine is warming up. Just have to put it in neutral (the there is fluid pumpin through the tranny) and have the e-brake up so it doesn't roll away.

 

Mine does the exact same thing. Then the rear seal started leaking, and it would get low in fluid. Of course, this made matters a little bit worse, so I replaced the seal. So the LEAK is fixed now, and it holds fluid just fine, but since that little incident, the hesitation to shift into OD has remained worsened by it. In other words, the leak made it go from bad to worse, but after fixing the leak, it didn't go back to bad, it just stayed at worse. Just another factor to consider in yall's quest to for the truth!

 

Check the shift cable/linkage adjustment.
