700R4 full manual?

Well, my tranny has to be rebuilt, so I'm gonna take this opportunity to have some stuff done. I would like to get a B&M Console Megashifter, and a "kit" to make my tranny to full manual. I have found the "B&M Manualpak" and the "TransGo 700-2&3".

From what I can tell, they both do the same thing. What ever gear the shifter is in, thats what gear the tranny is in. so at a stoplight, put it in 3rd, and it goes in 3rd (not that I would do that, but just for explenation purposes)

Does anyone have either of these? How do you like it? How hard does it shift? my tranny guy said that he could make it bark in all the gears with a "full manual shift" kit on my tranny. That would be sweet!

Oh, I have an 86 Iroc with a 350 (not factory) TPI, and a 700R4 tranny.

I've heard bad things about these setups for daily driven cars. I was told that at a stop you have to take off in first gear, or it will eventually destroy the transmission. So if you are at a stop and forget to put it in first gear and take off in first, there goes the transmission after only a few times. I can't say this is 100% accurate, but it is worth checking into.

The transmission has to be in "excellent" shape for you to even attempt this. If you attempt this, make sure you get the Trans-Go, with Corvette servo, and both boost valves, and you will not have the problems the B&M have.

StocRoc:, yea, I think starting out in a gear other than 1st would be a problem

Pro Build Automatics:

thanks for the info, I'm gonna tell the guy doing my tranny what you told me.

He is going to build the tranny more beefy, I guess the torque of the 350 tpi busted it, it was originaly mated to a 305.

what problems does the B&M have?

B&M does not address the inherent problems with the 700R4, among other things.

If you think the factory shifter is going to let you skip a gear, then change the rooster comb inside the transmission to a non F-Body style. This makes the lever harder to move, thereby keeping you from missing a gear with the full manual setup.

I also am looking into this, I had a couple of questions, like is this like a manual where you can up shift and downshift while driving, ive been told downshifting isnt a good thing to do with this setup except for take off. Second ive been told you dont really use your overdrive in this setup is this true also?

From what I have been told, there isn't anything wrong with going full manual, if your transmission is built right. As for downshifting? the guy rebuilding my transmission told me that if you keep it out of the redline, there is nothing wrong with downshifting.

If anyone knows differenty, please post!!
