Bought alum driveshaft, has grooves, ok to use?

I got an aluminum driveshaft off ebay for my 88 Iroc. Too bad this guy must have been blind or something! Near the differential end of the shaft there are 3 grooves, each about half a centimeter wide and maybe 1-1.5mm deep. They are about 4" long. Will these effect anything?

I took a look at my current driveshaft and it is more pitted than some of the abandoned farm machinery around here! So I figured possibly some grooves wouldn't effect much, but I wanted to make sure!

Also, will I notice any sort of a difference with this one as opposed to my old driveshaft?

Thanks!

if you're switching from stock steel DS to aluminum, you will notice the car will drive alot smoother, especially on the highway. alot of people say you will get 5 or more hp, but you definately won't feel the difference in power. i don't think the grooves will hurt anything, i say bolt it in and try it out. shouldn't take you more than a 1/2 hour. good luck.

could they be machined in there for balancing purposes?

or are they from breaking a rear u-joint and being beat against the ground??

most likely it won't matter as far as balance is concerned or strength. however it is a fact the the grooves will set up a stress riser and will be the point of origin if the part fails. i wouldn't worry about it too much.

Nah, it doesn't look like ground damage... where does the drive shaft loop go? If it goes near the rear of the shaft, that'd be my guess.

I put it in and noticed no difference in anything, rather it be vibrations or any sort of accelleration difference... I guess it's just to have it... and loose a few pounds!
