Putting a T56 into a pretty much stock L03?
Got a relatively stock L03, rear end is a 3.23 with worn out posi, blah blah. I am going to put in a new engine pretty soon, and a 12 bolt when I get the money. I want to go ahead and convert it from the 700R4 to a aftermarket Tremec T-56. Heres my question. I'm afraid my current tranny is going to go out. If I decide to go ahead and purchase the tranny now, and all its necessary items....how will it be behind the L03? Will it make it even slower off the line? How will the tranny act with the 3.23 gears? Yes I'll probably get great gas mileage, but I dont want to feel like I'm driving a civic or something.

I've still got my 3.23 gears from my V6, but I have a L98 now. Off the line SUCKS! It's either really slow, or the tires spin, or the engine stalls. Of course, without posi, I only have 1 tire spin, but I would really really recommend getting higher gears before racing. I'm going to go with 4.10 and a 4th gen rear once I get the engine done, and the money saved.

I had my stock 2.73 peg-leg behind my 6-speed for like 2 years. Talk about off-the-line bog!!!!! I finally found a 9-bolt with 3.70 gears and disc brakes and it's MUCH better now.
So yeah you can live with 3.23's for a while but when you get the 4.10 rear you'll be VERY happy.

Your car, if you can drive, should be faster overall with a T56.... they have a close ratio gears, unlike the 700R4. However, the T56 first gear is nowhere near as big as the 700R4's first gear, so off the line will definetly be slower. I put my T56 in with 3.73's at the same time, and it seems just right to me.

I like the 3.70 gearing a lot. It's a street car that sees a good bit of highway use and only makes it to the track once a season or so, and the ratio works out very well for me. If I raced it more or even stayed in town with it then I'd want about a 4.10 gear to get off the line a little quicker. Keep in mind the .5:1 6th gear overdrive....with 3.70's I pull around 1600rpm at 70 and get 24mpg out of a carbed 355 on the highway. 4.10's would probably be around 1900-2000 at 70. However, 4.10's will also bring the rpm's up quite a bit faster off the line, and we all know how TPI engines like to choke off above 4500rpm or so.....3.73's will keep you in the powerband longer.
Basically it comes down to personal preference and what the car will be used for.
