Another 9 bolt rear thread. Need some info.
I have done several searches and can't seem to find what I'm looking for. I have a 9 bolt from an 88 firebird. I really want to put this into my 83 Z-28. I think that it would be stronger than the 10 bolt that is in there now but not sure. Here is what I have done to the 10 bolt:
converted the axles to 28 spline
welded axle tubes
new auburn gears posi
richmond 3.73's
Here is what I want to do with the 9 bolt:
put in 3.73's and use the factory posi.
Is the 9 bolts posi as good as the auburn one that I just put into my 10 bolt?
The reason I want to use the 9 bolt is because it has bolt in axles and disc brakes vs. drums. I need to upgrade the rear on a budget because I can't get the ford 9" I had planned on. (just had a baby)
I have consistant 1.6 60' times and am currently running 7.70's in the 1/8th. The 10 bolt is holding up to the 350 but I have an afr headed 406 getting ready to go in and plan to run 10's with it. I don't trust the 10 bolt to that 406.
If it costs very much for a new posi I'll just wait for the ford 9" because the gears are pretty high already.

check this place out. from what is said yes the 9bolt posi will be stronger but, with unknown wear? who knows and also what gears do you have in it? this place will lead you in the right direction.... http://9bolt.com/

You'd be wise to use the 9 bolt. I was running a 355 with a B&M 144 blower, 5 speed in my 83 Trans Am & no issues with the 10 bolt. Then I installed a Keith Black 406 & 700R4 with a shift kit & almost instantly the 10 bolt started whining. Rumor has it the 9 bolts are good for 500HP w/o any mods.

Check the date on the thread though. This one was from 19 years ago.
