rough shifting (automatic)

'86 Firebird
I wondered if someone could tell me what might cause my car to jerk/jolt some when I shift (auto transmission).
There's no jerk when I shift from overdrive to neutral OR reverse to neutral. But between forward gears and shifting out of park causes a bit of a jerk.
Oh. And I'm talking about experiencing the jolt while stopped.
Had U-Joints checked a couple times. That's all.

Thanks. From someone with no transmission knowledge.

If you are talking about the park/neutral to any forward gear engagement?, then it is because there is not an accumulator. In 1987 they introduced this. A low idle helps here, or a higher stall torque converter helps.

Well, this is not something that my car has always done. That's why I wondered if there was something out of adjustment.

After I posted initially, I read that it could be from the tranny fluid being cold. Anyone agree?

No tachometer in my 'Bird.

I have a 92 R/S that is doing the same thing. When I shift it from park to drive it has about a 2-3 second delay then clunks into gear. This is the only problem with this tranny, and it is the original tranny. Accumulator? How to fix it? Thanks.
