Keep 3rd Gen rear vs 4th Gen rear
Keep 3rd Gen rear vs 4th Gen rear
So this is my dilemma that is keeping me awake some nights......
Should i throw out the old 3rd Gen Drum rear in favor for a 4th Gen disc rear.....
OR
Should i put some 3.23 gears, posi unit, disc brakes in the 3rd gen rear??
The car has 140,000 miles on it, what else should i do to the 3rd gen rear if i plan to keep it, or is it better to throw it to the wolves and upgrade to a 4th Gen disc rear??

Though it has been done, I believe that many modifications must be made to the drum brake rear axle assembly (backing plate, etc) in order to convert it to rear disc... There is a tech article iirc..

From a cost perspective, it would cost you way less money to purchase a 3.23 or 3.42 4th gen rear, than it would to purchase gears, bearings, seals, a posi unit and a disc brake setup for your current rear.

I'm getting ready to put a rear end from caliper to caliper off a 98 Z28 into my 89 Trans Am. So from what I'm hearing, no install problems? are my stock wheels gonna stick out? lol, I already paid for it, got to pick it up whenever I want. Paid nothing for it, yay me! traded a computer for it.

speed sending unit is in the trans. there is a sensor on the center section for abs, just leave it there with nothing plugged into it.
