700R4 convertion to T-5

Well its been almost 4 years and finally my Raptor 700R4 has started to die..In all honesty, I drove the heck out of it, with little to no mercy, other than fluid and filter changes, and I put alot and I mean alot of miles on it...So now the thought crosses my mind, how big of a deal is it to change to a t-5...I know the t-56 is a heavier duty trans, but my wallet is a little light for that right now, and as I said the raptor is on her last leg..When I bought my Camaro new I originally wanted a 5 speed manual, but there was no availibility, at least as per the dealer..I figure that if its gonna be too expensive or a major p.i.a. I'd send my raptor back to be rebuilt, but again, I love this car, and the thought of a 5 speed excites me..I appreciate any and all opinions on this matter..As always, Thanks guys...

If you've killed a built 700R4, then a T5 won't stand a chance.
Either go for the T-56, or get the slushbox rebuilt.

I hear ya, but I gotta say, the raptor got almost 80K on it, as I said I drove the crap out of it, also its the 1st gear planet that is breaking on the raptor, and local tranny shop wants to totally rebuild it.. I have no intention of letting them do it, I just wanted a diag...Now that schools over, I wont be putting that monster mileage on it anymore...Just thought I'd add that...Thanks again

How many miles did you get out of the 700R4?

By and large I've got to agree with Petes84Z28. If you killed a built 700R4, a T5 won't fare any better, and probably worse.

Im not sure if I could call 80,000 miles killed, maybe died, or passed on, but killed? I thought that was kinda good for a raptor...Am I wrong?

Well I did a 200c to TH350 to 700R4 to T5 swap so I guess it might qualify as done the swap.

I think it was worth the effort, I dont go around pounding on my T5 but its held some abuse. The only way to go on this kinda swap is to buy a parts car or have one avalible to look at while you swap. A couple holes need to be made but the swap is no big deal. The hardest part is finding the parts. Console peice was my biggest concern but I found one quicker then I was expecting.

The console plate is still available new from GM. Year One stocks them for about $65. That's where I got mine when I did my 700R4 to T56 swap.

There are three holes you need to put in the firewall. The firewall pad should have cutouts for these holes. I used mine as a template and drilled through the firewall and the ground down the sharp edges with my Dremel.

I feel any automatic to manual swap is worth it. I do not like automatics.

I coulden't agree with you more..Dont get me wrong, I had some fun with that 700r4 but after 12 years of auto trans I think its time for a change, just wish I had the loot for a t-56... And I would add that the raptor was a solid deal. I just hope I can swing the bucks for this conversion...
