Just had to post this on another board to brag Did my own gears in my mustang, and its a 2 hour job using air tools, everything people tell you about it being super hard and complicated is BS, and my gears are quieter than stock, make no noise at all. I will NEVER take it up the behind for $400 in gear swap labor charges anymore! hehehheh

Nope, just swapping gears isn't all that hard. Reassembling a pile of mismatched parts is a little harder. You have to worry about pinion depth then.
Worst part of the job is tightening the pinion nut.

$400, apparently they farmed it out and added a mark up. An experienced tech should do it in 2 hrs or so.

not hard at all, just differant than what most people do. setting up ring and pinion isn't bad but requires tools most people don't have.

Yes, it's not really hard at all; but a good dose of luck helps out alot if you don't have any way to measure anything. Although, if you're using most of the street gears for the 7½" rear, you can just stick them back together with a .035" shim, and you have better than a 90% chance it will be within factory tolerance (since every factory one I've ever taken apart had a .035" shim in it...) Couldn't say about 8.8" F*rds though.

Come back after a few thousand miles and let us know how it's doing.

Can't say im in the same category but I definatley agree. People were just about frightening me on whether I should install my own posi unit, saying its not a drop and go job....Well bud, it is. I just used the shims from my old carrier and put it back in place.

It wasn't that bad with it in the car, but I didn't swap the pinion gear, however that fricken bar in front of the pumpkin pissed me off quite a bit.

Yeah it wasn't that bad!!! I think it was fine w/ the rear end still in the car, but it would have been easier on my back if it wasn't!!!:lala:

LoL, I hear that, im glad my wife didnt snap a picture of me, I have the rear about 3-4 feet in the air, I was sitting there indian style like an idiot with my neck sideways and the side of my head on my muffler playing with the carrier trying to get it in, and I live on a Circle road so a lot of people drive by to turn around.

I bet they thought "OMG, that guy is holding the car up by his head, its crushing him!"

Oh well, I have posi now, thats all that matters.
