rear gear?

hey guys i got a few questions for you that you can hopefully help with... alright first im about to go to a junk yard tomorrow and i wanan loog around for a new rear gear... currently i have a 2.73 and with the cam i have its spends to much time in 2nd gear makin no power... with the mods i have in the sig and hopefully headers soon... what gears shouldi be looking for... i thought about 3.73 but im thinkin i might be better off with a 3.42 by the way i do have OD... also i hear all this talk about the stock tachs being off... i was wondering if the berlinetta digital tach was accurate? i mean it seems to be but i owuld have nothing to compare it to.. thanks for any help its appreciated...

just as inaccurate as the rest in these cars... as far as gears thats more of an opinion, 3.42's will drop your gas mileage less then the 373's will.. both will give you a huge boost in pickup, obviously the 373's more so than the 342's, 373's will have faster acceleration but less top end, the 342's will have more top end and less accel... its your choice.. I'd look for a posi carrier as well.. as far as locating them in a JY most if not all 5 speed cars had 373's, as far as 3.42's look for an auto.. but its a toss up.. best way to tell what your getting is to pull the dif cover and look

Either one.

I have 3:73's. When I had them installed, I went from a 2:73 one legger to the locker and the 3:73's. I like it a lot. But the stock LG-4 305 would have done better with the 3:42's or even 3:23's. The 3:73's (and my lead foot) wanted more rpm's than the LG-4 could give. This didn't matter to me as the 355 was going in soon anyway.

If you plan on installing headers soon, I'd go with the 3:73's.

However I am not for certain, but I do not beleive any thirdgens came with 3:73's. I thought they did, but I argued with the parts guy at the dealership about this and he said no. I thought that the 92 aniversary edition had the 6 speed and the 3:73 rear, but I later found out that the car I read about was a GM skunk works car.

So your 3:73's may have to be new setup. Or else you could go with a used 3:42 rear.

Stinkin parts people at the dealership I go to s u c k. They never want to help and say that GM doesn't want me to hot-rod my car and their not allowed to help. If I don't come in there with a part number I might as well not even go in there.

If you are going to drive it daily go with the 3:42.

If its a toy, go with the 3:73, you will like them.

gotta tell us what kind of tranny you have, plays a huge role in choosing gears.

I'm ashamed in you guys giving advice without knowing what tranny he has.

I don't see it that way

I would use a 3:73 with a manual or a 700R4. I want to get a manual some day and I will keep my 3:73's.

ok then, i'de go with 3.42's if its a daily driver. With an extra gear i'de definitly go with 3.73's, but i'de stick with 3.42 since you dont have a 5 speed. I spent a lotta time weighing the pros and cons since im gonna be putting in new gears in the next week or so, decided to go with 3.42's w/my 700R4.

The choice is up to nobody but yourself though, im just giving my 2 cents. Either way you decide to go you'll be very happy getting rid of those 2.73's

In another post on this site a guy said that he had found a rear end in the bone yard recently for $75.00. No info on wether it was a 9 bolt or a 10 bolt, or if it was posi or open, or what gear ratio.

You get/keep the engine in the powerband with the proper stall converter.

You get the trap or cruise RPM you want with gears (and tires).

You could have 4.10 gears but if you have a 1500 stall converter and the cam comes in at 2500, it's still going to be a dog off the line (just not as much as it would be with 2.73 gears).

It's a "package" thing.

Yep, $75.00 for a complete rear end at the U-pull-its around here. I called and asked about the following axle...

10 bolt, 7 1/2in., 3.42's, drum brakes, posi unit...

They told me that they dont give a **** what's in it, any 3rd-gen complete rear-ends are $75 as long as you pull it yourself. And they even said they'de use one of their pickups to help get it outta the yard

So just make a few calls, if you dont have any luck at U-pull-its try an auto wrecking place. The prices will be quite a bit higher though.

BTW - That link that my3rd gen. was refering to...
