How can I tell what rear end I have?

I have a 91 camaro rs with the tbi 305. Just wondering how to tell what rear that I have so that I can start buying parts to beef it up a little?

Thanks

Bill

Most likely you have 10 bolt (7.5" ring gear) "open" non positrac rear end. If you have your heart set on spending money on it, buy a used positrac unit, and have a drivetrain shop install it for you. If you have any money left, put in a 3.73 gear at the same time........ you will like it. So long as you are running the tbi motor that set up will be plenty stout for what you have.

Hey thanks for the reply. How about axles? Should I step up and buy them along with the reinforced cover?

Thanks

one more thing... 89's and up have 28-spline axles, 88 and below are 26-spline... so when u buy a posi unit you'll have to make sure its for 28-splined axles.

Hey good call man. I will start looking for the posi unit. Will a posi unit hinder my performance driving like through turns when racing the ricers? If so is there better option? And what brands are good if any are better than others?

Thanks for the help dudes,

Bill

Currently you have a 7.5" 10-bolt with 2.73 gears and an open differential - this is most likely.

Your axles will be fine. I suggest you get either 3.42 of 3.73 gears and a Zexel Torsen posi - they are cheap and very nice units. (they are considered used since they were put in and immediatly taken out of F-bodies who requeste4d an auburn unit)

Just call SLP, tell them what you are doing, and they will get you everything you need.

I agree with Bandit... the SLP Zexel-Torsen take-off unit is an excellent posi unit, as well as very affordable since it has about 2 miles on it. Get it.

If you have those 2.73 gears (like me ) those also have to go. Since you have a 5-speed, i'de go with 3.73's... those are typically a little to steep for the 700R4's and other auto tranny's but you'll stay perfectly streetable with that extra gear, not to mention you'll get a great seat-of-the-pants feel... and you can never go wrong with that.

And to answer your unanswered question... Nope, posi wont hinder cornering at all.

Hope that helps!

You need to do some more reseach on this subject before ordering parts. Example: Find out what rear you have now and identify what parts can be used to upgrade it. My opinion.

Guys thanks for the all the input and it was very well taken. I am going to find out exactly what I have in the rear and then start buying parts.

Thanks again,

Bill
