t56 help
Well i just got my t56 out of a 94 z28. Its going into my 92 RS w/ a t5 already sitting in it. So far i know that i will need to enlarge the holes for the shifter and get a new master/slave cyclinder. Where is the best place to get m/c and s/c from? I cant get them off the donor car as the yard didnt have them. Do i have to go to GM? im sure they will rape me. Also, ive seen pics of t56's and most have a little plug in for CAGS. On my tranny, the hole where it should be is there, sort of. It is just an indent but there is no real hole. Like GM put it there incase they wanted to drill it out, but never did. Is this cool or did i get a FUBAR tranny?

CAGS is the connector under the shifter on the first picture. If you look through the shifter hole you'll see the solinoid. Im not sure what that metal thing is.

The connector under the shifter IS the reverse lockout noid. As the pasky said, if you look in the shifter hole you can see the noid and how it prevents you from poping into reverse when not energized.
The CAGS thing should be exactly where you pointed it to be, I don't know why it isn't... I got my t56 for a 94 trans am, so it should be the same exact thing. I've got a book on the t56 in the garage, lemme go check it out real quick...
EDIT: Doesn't say anything about no CAGS but that thing you pointed out on the "passanger" side of the tranny is listed as, "Shift Detent Assembly."

the item on the passenger side of the trans mid-case located is a detent for the shift rail stuff (so it "notches into" each gear instead of being sloppy)
The lack of CAGS might make it a 93 box. Not sure, but that's all I can think of.
I see you're still here posting misinformation like I told you not to.

So then i take it my t56 is of the weaker kind? Arg, o well. Im not looking to put up more than 400 horses or trq under this thing. Hopefully she will hold up well.
Still, anyone know where te best place to get the cylinders are (m/c and s/c) ?

If you couldn't get the master and slave cylinder unit from the donor car you might want to try www.gmpartsdirect.com
They have decent prices, generally cheaper then going straight to a dealer. If I remember correctly i think the unit only ran me $80?-$90? brand new, already filled with fluid and ready to install. In order to order it you need to get the part number for it first...or get a vin off of a 6-speed camaro in some parking lot and email gmpartsdirect for a quote of on the master/slave cylinder assembly. I do not have the part number handy.
As far as the CAGS solinoid goes, it doess't look like it was ever machined for it to be installed. Could be a 93, not sure what year they started the CAGS skip shift.

just wondering, do all the other plugs already exist on our cars. Im guessing the VSS and reverse lights for sure, but how about that revers lockout noid? (my car is a 92 rs, so it should have the electric speed and vss should not have to be changed?)

nope; reverse lockout is not a third gen thing.
Personally, I kinda want a 93 2.97 first, .62 sixth box instead of my 95 box but too late; I already modified it.
The 2.97 first ratio 1993 box is rated 400lb-ft; I'd just run it and enjoy it. Hey, what numbers are on the metal tag attached on the right side tailhousing bolt? That'll tell us ratios.

I would go along with the guess that it's a '93 box. I've been running a '93 unit for a couple thousand miles now with no problems. I'd run it and enjoy the 6 gears. I think you'd need to thrash it pretty hard to notice the difference in strength between the '93 and the '94-97 units, but that's just my opinion. I'll have to look at my tranny when I get home and see if I have that CAGS boss on mine. I don't remember seeing it, but I wasn't looking for it because I knew it was a '93 unit. Anyway good luck with the install. I used a complete GM slave/master cylinder assembly from GM and bolted it right up, it worked like a charm, was already bled, and I really like how the hydraulic line is a braided steel line
. It should be a pretty smooth install. Have fun!
