Whine from differential...
I'm still figuring everything out on the 92 RS since I finally had the time to get it on the road. I have the 5-speed manual with factory 3.08 open rear end. I always hear whining coming from the car in 1st, 2cd, and 3rd gear and at first I thought it was the transmission, but when I took a closer listen I'm pretty sure it is coming from the differential. Is this normal with the stock rear on 5-speeds?

It should not whine at all. Do you have an aftermarket shifter. It is common to hear gear whine in the tranny with aftermarket shifters.

Aftemarket gears, especially Richmond, whine. But if you have a factory open dif. like you said, then you probably don't have aftermarket gears

In stock form, 10-bolts are pretty cheesy. Mine started to whine so loud I coulndt even hear the radio. When I took it apart, the gearset was trashed from the backlash opening up. I would assume it has to do with the crush sleeve crushing down some more.

Check the fluid level. If its low add fluid and see if that helps the whine. You might want to change the fluid too. I change mine at least every 10,000 miles. Just a simple precauation. If that doesn't help, jack the car up, pull the driveshaft and make sure the pinion nut isn't backing off. Mine started howling b/c the pinion nut backed off and the pinion started slapping around until the backlash was so messed up the gears just ate themselves up. Trust me I know what to listen for now. It only takes one major situation for you to listen for it again...
I just ****ed up my Moser 9" when the seals leaked too much oil and I friend the bearings. I drove around for 4 months dealing with ever increasing whinning even after refilling it with oil. By the end, it was a grinding noise, and when I go tto the shop, I swear I could feel the ring gear moving around and about to break. That thing barely made it. But now that it is rebuilt with some nice gears (Precision) it is perfect. Just gotta watch those damn seals.

Richmond's have a tendency to whine between 40 and 50 on both accell and decell. Its just something they do. 99% of the people I have talked to have that same problem. Call Richmond, they will tell you they whine at that speed.

Ok, I was listening closer last night and it appears that my differential seems to be whining only in 3rd hear when I'm going slow. The rest of the whining is coming from my tranny when I'm in 1st, 2cd, and maybe a little in 3rd. I hope nothing is f'ed up because the freaken car only has 69K on it.
FYI - http://www.precisiongear.com/ I highly reccomend.
