is my clutch dead?
ok so i was heading home from the fresno cruise i attended, when i noticed that in fifth gear , i could mash the gas pedal and watch my rpms jump up to about 4 grand and then come back down..
about 210 miles later when i get home, i come to the last and only stoplight, and i could just mash the pedal in any gear and it would rev like i had the clutch in, but barely move the car, my car is parked about 1/4 mile away from my house, and their is no more clutch.
i can start the car, and without touching the clutch pedal, i can shift through all the gears, and if i let go of the break and apply gas, car just revs and starts rolling backwards (cut its parked on a slight hill)
so what is toast? do i need a new clutch plate or what?
i did notice on my last few feet when i was giving it gas to try to make it move, their was lots of clutch smoke!
cough cough

Sounds like you could use a new clutch assembly. Did you smell anything burning? Usually you get a slight burrning smell before it goes completly. Anyway remember to have the flywheel surfaced so your new clutch will last longer.

Probably the pressure plate went first and couldn't hold enough pressure against the clutch disc and now their both toast. Its best to do it all and do it right the first time. Just get a complete clutch kit, not Autozone or Advance as you'll be doing it again real soon, have the flywheel resurfaced, and replace everything at once and don't forget the pilot bearing. I don't know if you can go to a dealer and get a GM clutch, but a friend of mine replaced the one in his 96 Z71 truck and he went through 3 from Advance in the matter of 2 weeks before he went to the dealer and installed a GM clutch, no more problems. Its more expensive but worth it. Centerforce would be good also.
Just my opinion...

I would say its toast. My clutch was going out on me so I figured I would drive it to where my friend works at a dealership to let him replace it. I already had the new parts. Centerforce 2 disc and Pressure Plate, a new throwout bearing, and he had a spare flywheel (that he had resurfaced) from a conversion he was going to do to his Camaro. But halfway there it went bust on the highway. I was in the right lane so I got over. Every gear was nothing with the pedal all the way out.
And not to hijack your thread or anything, but I was wondering if you had to replace the whole assembly each time, because it feels like my clutch is starting to slip. Is it possible just to replace the disc? Oddly the clutch is only about a year old.

Its best to replace the whole assembly, the pressure plate gets warped and the fingers usually get soft after extended use. I personally havent had many issues with Cumberland (old AZ) or Dyna Pack (new AZ/Advanced) clutches just the people who work there. Nappa sells a house brand clutch assembly that is made by Zoom, says so on the box and it usually runs $20 more then the A/A brand clutche assemlys. Might also consider replacing the piliot bushing (brass) with a piliot bearing for $10 more.

im not too familiar with clutches at all..
and yes it is official.. it is 'slipping'
without touching the pedal, i can shift through all gears just like as if i were in neutral the whole time.
when this problem occurs, what exactly do i have to replace?
the clutch disc, and pressure plate?
how about throw out bearing? i replaced that about 4 months ago.
thanks for help.!

I've always been a believer of replacing all that you can when the need arises. I would hate the thought of putting a new clutch in and then hearing the throw out bearing whine. Its took alot of heat to toast your clutch and you never know what all its affected. Besides, the cost is not very much compared to pulling the trans and putting in a new one. You know Murphy's law, and it knows me all too well...
