What would happen if someone change your gears while cruising? (AUTO)

What would happen if someone change your gears while cruising? (AUTO)

I was cruising the other day and a lil kid
brother of my exgal ...suddenly pressed the button and
changed my gears to "R" ...i reacted as fast as Flash and put the gear back into "D"
This was less than second and the car continued cruising normally and nothing happened.
Well i was wondering ...what would happen if you are at
30MPH ..average and unintentionally someone puts you
on "R" or ...even worst ......."P" --->OUUCH !!!

I was driving my parent's MPV (RWD mini-van) and tried to knock the column shifter into neutral but went one too far. It was only in reverse for a second before I got it back into drive. It barked the tires and decelerated kindof like hitting the brakes. I didn't leave a trail of tranny and rear-end parts all over the road or anything.

Sounds like you caught it before the tranny tried to shift. I have done it once in a non f-body and the car just turned off. I had to put it back in park and it started right up. newer cars have this safety feature. This was a 95 GM model so I am not sure if it had that feature or not. Non the less, if the car actually engages into gear bad things will most likely be the outcome.

I think id have to say reverse is alot worse than park. Park is just like neutral except there is a little mechanical pawl that tries to lock the trans from moving. In reverse it is actually attepting to change the direction of the engine rotation when engaged while moving foreward.

In reverse it is actually attepting to change the direction of the engine rotation when engaged while moving foreward.
No it doesn't, your engine does not change direction of rotation.

I think what dankhound ment was that since the car is moving forward and R is engaged that it trys the spin the engine backwards. but the tire would just spin if rpm is high or the engine would stall. But if you put it in park you will break that locking pawl.

Thats exactly what i ment. When the trans engage revese a planetary gearset is used to change thedirection of rotation. Which do you think has more torque. A 2 ton vehicle driving a shaft or a little engine.

Sunday I didn't pump the brakes on a customer's car after a brake job (it totally slipped my mind) and I backed it off the lift and had to throw it into park to stop it. It rolled to a semi-smooth stop considering it rolled up onto the curb, but the tranny just started clicking really loud, almost the same sound some parking brakes make when you pull them.

Yep that clicking was the parking pawl attempting to lock itself but the trans was spinning to fast for it to happen so it kept bounching out.

Ha, I was putting my dads '79 Chevy 454 into neutral to coast down a gravel road, went to put it into drive again and bumped it into reverse. Rear tires locked up, sounded terrible, finally got the car into neutal again, and steering got real tough - I was like, WTH? Truck coasted to a stop, dead quiet - the engine had quit. Started back up and away I went, none to worse for wear. I sure miss that truck... I did it ON PURPOSE on my moms minivan, it simply slowed down and bogged. Put it into drive and away it went, none the worse for wear. I suppose the torque convertor bore the brunt of it, IDK...

I told the customer it was her muffler hitting the curb.
