tranny wont engage
Well after 10 months of building up my GTA from stock to 355, the tranny wont engage. I finally got it running and it sounds like a beast! But now it sucks cuz I cant drive it anywhere. Im wondering what wouldnt make the tranny engage at all. All wires and the tv cable are hooked up. I got a used TC from someone on here and the tranny itself came from my camaro that was wrecked before.
There is a whine that comes from the engine whenever I rev it. I dont know whether it is something from the tranny or the double chain timing gear I put on. It is pretty loud and sounds like a supercharger. If anyone else needs any more info to help me out, I'd happily provide it.

First thing id check is that the shifter is actually engaging the trans and telling it to shift into gear. You could try pulling off the shifter and engageing it manually.
I take that back thats the second thing id check. First thing id check is the trans fluid level. If its low it wont shift into any gear.

Well I shifted it while my dad was under the car and he said the shifter was working. The fluid level was low after we did the breakin for the engine so we added some more. We had added 5 quarts to start and it was full. After the tranny was hot we saw it needed more so it had about a total of 7 quarts in it. It then read full. Any other suggestions?

how could I check if it is actually the tranny or the TC giving me the problem?
Does anyone have experience with those double chain timing belts? Do they really sound that loud?

Usually you test a torque converter with a stall test(brake torque). But if something inside the trans isnt engagin the clucths it will just spin up so a stall test woulnt really help you here. You could have a pessure test done on the trans but thats something youll probably have to take it to a shop for.
I guess one thing you could try would be pulling the trans cooler lines but i dont remember exactly how much pressure is in that line so i wouldnt recomend it without getting confirmation from other board members. That would tell you if your pump is actually being driven by the torque converter and that the converter is actually moving the fluid to the cooler.

I think I may have found the reason for the whine and why it wont engage. The tranny I was using was from an 83 that needed a 27 spline TC. The TC I got was for a 30 spline and a 85 and up tranny. I knew there were different spline convertors but didnt know they made that big of a difference. I guess now I know.
