700r4 not shifting back into 1st all the time.

I've been having ocassional stalling problems lately, I have checked everthing on my engine, all is fine.

Yesterday when it died, I finally realized, its the trans not shifting back down into first gear. Sometimes it will go to stall, loud clunk from the trans, rpms pick back up and all is fine. I can "manually" shift it into first, all is fine.

So what is wrong, or needs to be adjusted? What controls shifts between 1st and second?
Converter?
Detent cable?
fluid?
something inside the trans?

Sounds like your TCC is not disengaging. It would feel similar to a stick shifts clutch not being pushed in when you stop.

thanks for the 2 suggestions. Was wishing more people would chime in

I read somewhere on here that the gov. usually ends up being destroyed when removing it. Can I just drop a new one in?

How hard is the TCC switch to replace?

more people to chime in huh? Hey man, it could be your lugnuts. Just Kidding man, both suggestions sound likely to me. Good luck chasing it down.

lugnuts make a different noise, and not from the center of the car

I guess I will have to pull out my gm manual and start reading now

Does it shift down (2-1) when you punch it? If it doesn't then you may need to adjust your TV cable. Make sure that the housing is pulle all the way out/back so the cable is tight when the throttle is at full open.

Dale, sometimes the govenor cover can get bent a little while removing it. As for the govenor itself it just pulls straight out. Once the cover is off the govenor slides out easily.

To check if it is the TCC solenoid sticking, disconnect the 4 wire plug from the trans (driver side, about center, facing upward). This will prevent the TCC from applying. If the problem goes away, then a good chance the soleniod is sticking.

Easy to replace, drop pan, 2 bolts for the soleniod, disconnect a couple of connectors (pressure switches), remove connector from trans body, install opposite of removal.

RBob.

FireBoid, I haven't payed attention to your suggestion, I will try to duplicate my problem again, and try that.

Rbob, How long of a drive can I make doing your suggestion w/o damaging the trans? Sounds like an easy one to test also.

Well, due to whenever the car wants to die, someone is infront of me, I couldn't test the "push the peddle" trick, so I just adjusted the Detent cable, this did not help it.

So I'm still stuck.

Dale-

You won't burn up your tranny- I haven't had a locking converter in front of my S10's Probuilt tranny since I installed it and it's still going strong- taking donations for that new 9 1/2" ACT if your feeling generous!
