T5 Buildup

I am going to be obtaining a rebuilt 350 low miles and recently rebuilt the owner says it has about 400 horsepower but i'm hoping it has at least 300. The problem is I want to rebuild the stock t5 so that it can withstand the hp/torque of the 350. Is this possible if i brought it to a rebuild shop?

It isn't horsepower that breaks transmissions; it's torque. Is the new motor going to be fuel injected (TPI/TBI) or carb?

What kind of rear end are you running? What kind of tires? How will the car be used (drag, street, street/strip. ect.)?

The T5 should fare fairly well in a street car. Most likely you will smoke the tires before you put enough stress on the trans to break it.

I would recommend a complete rebuild with upgraded 2nd and 3rd gears (double moly). Buy a good shifter (I recommend Pro 5.0, but Hurst and others have good reps too). I wouldn't powershift it too often either. A steel bearing retainer is also a good way to go.

A reputable local shop should be able to handle the work for you. If you can't find one you like drop me a PM and I'll rebuild it for you.

TKO--how much $$ would this rebuild of a T5 to handle 400hp/torque for the street run?

I believe that the complete rebuild kit (synchros, bearings/races, seals) runs about $185. The steel bearing retainer is around $60. The double moly 2nd & 3rd gears are about $65 each. The labor should run you roughly $200 with the trans out of the car.

Grand total: $575.

TKO--OK, how about shipping to your shop for this rebuild? Do you have a favorite shipper?

Pecha--outstanding! How are your roads in Poland? What rear end gears do you run?

Just curious, is a steel bearing retainer better to prevent wear on only the outside (TOB) or the inside as well (input bearing)???

The stock one on f-bodies is steel already, so this is unnecessary.

Aluminum ones wear out and screw up. That's why Mustangs get them as an upgrade that should have been there from the factory.

rbjones, I prefer to use UPS. They should ship a trans for about $65.

jmd, thanks for the heads up on the bearing retainer. I wonder why the Mustang got the aluminum one? Typical Ford I guess. They do things 95% right, but the 5% they do wrong will drive you nuts!

Hanlon Motorsports just quoted me $250 labor to rebuild my T-5 trans, plus parts and shipping. They said $170 for the complete rebuild kit or $89 for just the refresh kit.

The upgraded 2nd and 3rd gears sounds like a great idea...along with making sure you have the steel retainer...

The only downside to G Force is the $$$...for that kind of money, I would rather buy a Tremec or do a T-56 swap.

TKO--Well, I'm gonna do this TKO upgrade--established firm, right in the ballpark on price, knowledge on those internal parts. GForce makes an excellent tranny--straight cut gears look like an old M22 inside--but, good grief, the $$$! Other companies provide great service on total packages but again, the $$$! I'm not rich, not in that market.
My Camaro is a long-term project--already built the rear end with 28 spline Torkelson, Mosers, 3.73's and boxed arms--this TKO upgrade to the WCT5 will make the drive train ready for 400 hp/ft lbs. The only racing it will see is SOLO II and open road, amateur stuff, and what I don't spend on the drive train I can put in the motor, suspension and motel rooms.

For $1300 delivered, I got the G-Force T5 prepped by "Bubba" with a "600hp" rating...No other parts to buy or mods required, unlike the T-56 or Tremec...Sounds like a sweet deal to me

Yeah--that sounds like a pretty good price on a turn-key 600hp tranny.
