NEW 9 bolt or new 10 bolt, which to use?
I have two complete rearends, each with very low miles.... and want a 3.42/3.45 ratio. What do you think?
1989 10 bolt 2.73 posi drum.... 19,000 miles on it, and posi is tight
1989 9 bolt 2.77 posi disc.... 30,000 miles on it, posi is tight
I know both carriers are 2 series. I can swap the pbr brakes over to the 10 bolt if need be, I have the needed backing plates.
I can get gears for the 9 bolt cheap, easily less than a 10 bolt Richmond 2 series set (175)
thanks.... I have done much research IE: "SEARCHING", and will not trade my Iroc 9 bolt rear back in the states but need a push here. thanks shawn

well, i just bought a set of 3.45's and a set of 3.70's!!!!!!
WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE. Now i really have a problem
Guess i will do a gear swap on the 9 bolt. Oh and for what it's worth i have a friend flying to "down under" and will have hi pick me up a 3 series posi, for my IROC in the states. THis rear here, i will put a shim in the low mile 2 series carrier. later

How do you get 9 bolt gears cheap?? I wanted a set of 3.45s but couldnt find anything and had to settle for 3.27s.
I also say go with the 9 bolt.

Except for the PBR's, the 9-Bolt isnt worth much. The only part youll be able to use with gears higher then 3.08 is the housing. The carrier and axles are both useless since it has a different carrier and 28 spline axles.

To my knowledge, the lower series carriers had the 28 spline while the higher series carriers had the 31 spline axles. While physically the same, the 28 spline axles are machined down at the end to accomodate the lesser number of splines

This was taken from the 9 bolt FAQ posted by drain89
"All 9 bolt rears for f-bodies use 28 spline axles."

Guess teh 31's must be available as an aftermarket upgrade option, or not available at all for the f-body based 9-bolt rears. Remember seeing that they where available with both 28 and 31 spline axles for the f-bodies. In the case that they use 28 spline for all, the only real leg up that it has over the 10 bolt is the fact that the axles are pressed in rather then retained by c-clips, and the carrier is slightly larger in dia.
