B&M Shifter Help!

Hey I'm looking at 90 IROC I may buy, but it has a B&M shifter installed and it wasn't done correctly. To get from Park to Drive it have to basically use all my force and tug like a biotch! I felt like I was going to break it but the seller said just give it a good tug. I don't think thats normal, but I don't know since I've never had one.

Is that suppose to happen? Also it doesnt tell me which gear I'm in, the indicator seems to be broken, he said it was a cable or something that needs to be connected. How hard is that to fix? Thanks, Suke.

This is an easy fix. Most of the time when the shifter gets tight like that it's probably a little out of adjustment or the cable is binding.

Make sure the cable is looped the right way. (not too tight of turns or it will bind).
Check the adjustment on the linkage to make sure it is correct also.
Make sure the bracket that hold the linkage is on the right way.
If it still has problems you may need to purchase a replacement cable. They can be purchased on Jegs and Summit for fairly cheap and from soem autoparts stores.

As far as the shift indicator, you need to check to make sure that it is actually connected.

So I finally got around to pulling the boot off and getting a good look at whats going on inside.

Turns out that the indicator cable is connected, but there seems to be some friction between the cable and the tubing that doesnt not allow the cable to move. I can forcefully push the cable in when I put it in drive, and the indicator will movie, and then I can put it back in PARK and it will get pulled back out and the indicator will move to P. But the cable has a hard time actually going IN the tube when shifting down. Maybe I'll need a new cable? I might try wd40ing this one and hope that fixes it.

As for the shifter shifting problem, I noticed the shifter cable goes into a rubber grommet and probably underneath the car? How will I reach this cable to make sure it is looped correctly? Will I need to lift the car and remove anything? Everytime I tug it into drive, I feel like I might break something!

You should be able to see the routing clearly from under the car.. It should curve to the passenger side after exiting the grommet, looping around the back of the transmission (close to the transmission mount), and smoothly curve toward the shift bracket on the drivers side trans pan rail.
