26,27,28 splines on a 9 bolt carrier?

Hey everyone, hope you can help me.

I just won an ebay auction for a posi (3 series carrier) for the 9 bolt. I was just browsing through some of the posts and someone stated that the spline count is different in 89!!

I have an 89 Iroc and I just won an auction for a carrier from an 87 Iroc!! Did I just throw away my moula?? Can I swap the internals from my 2 series?

Any help would be appreciate!! Or a correct 3 series SERIOULSY!!

If you have one for sale, sell it too me (gears would be a bonus, must have 3.73's)

Thanks in advance

I think the spline count being different was for the 10 bolts rears.

9 Bolt spline count would be 28. Late 89+ 10 bolts converted to 28...before then, they had 26.

Carriers: 3.27+ on 9 bolt are a 3 series carrier.

88 and earlier 10 bolts are 26 spline. 90 and later 10 bolts are 28. 89 was transition year and cound be either.

Hey People

I don't feel so bad asking the question... I thought there was a definitive answer and being a newbie at first I felt it might have been a dumb question!

Anyway here is another question, since the 9 bolts don't have c-clips I am assuming the only thing holding the axles in is the bolts at the ends (axle flanges)?

Once unbolted they slide out??

Or I am going to need a slide hammer or something???

Yes, on the 9 bolts the only thing holding the axles in are the 4 bolts at the end of the axle. Well, that and the friction on the bearings.

I pulled the driver's side axle and it required quite a bit of hammering. The passenger side was practically impossible but eventually went. I ended up tearing the seal. To swap the seal out, you have to remove the bearings! Good time to do new wheel bearings anyhow.

I think the difficulty encountered in removing the axle shaft is dependent on how long it has been in there. If you just installed it, its a piece of cake. Mine had been in there for 170K. Lots of thermal cycles there!

If your going to do this, you might as well change your bearings, unless you think everything looks really good. Inspect your bearings and races really thoroughly though.

I though 9-bolts were 30 spline?

As far as I know, ALL 9 bolts were 28 spline...10 bolts varried from 26-28

OK, SweetRide45, after doing some more research I think you are right and I was misinformed. Thanks for catching me!

All 9-Bolts installed in F-Bodys were 28 Spline.

If I can, I'm going to try to edit my previous post so I don't get someone else confused - the way I was.

Hey people

I finally got the posi unit in (28 spline!!) Now I just have to take the rear axle apart and wait for the gears and then I have to order bearings, seals, and THEN I have to learn how to set the darn thing up!

Grizzlee: Sorry to hear that man

I know the feeling about being anxious to drive the car. I just FINALLY finished my car after being garage kept for 8 months! Well worth the wait. Patience is the key. The reward will be much better in the long run!!

You should be able to swap the internals.

Hey Dyno

I was thinking of the same thing (swapping internals) the only thing that I am worried about is the condition of the carrier halves...

They look beat up? no?

Second picture on my post...

I haven't pulled the one (2 series) out of the diff yet but I think it's in alot better shape.

OK here is a dumb question not again!! what part of the 2 series carrier makes it a 2 series? Make sense? I mean can I just take the 3 series half (ring gear side) and attach it to the 2 series half???
