If you take the ecm out....

so this topic touches on a few general area's so ill stick it here in the line of traffic.

92 rs...

wondering What sensor(s) tell the ecm to lock up the TC.

Will the TC lock-up take place on this car even though its carbed?

i still have the ecm, was just wondering if i could run it, or if i had to buy the TCI setup.

VSS, TPS, MAP, 4th gear switch (although that can vary from PROM to PROM).

ty, that answers my question entirely. if the FI is removed, nothing will make the TC lock up other than the ALDL switch and the TCI type switch.

correct?

The power will still be going to the tranny. All the ECM does is ground the return wire to lock up the TC.

So, you can use a "normally-open" 4th gear switch that grounds when pressurized, hook that up to the return wire of the solenoid, and the TC will lock as soon as the tranny shifts to 4th (OD). It will still unlock when you hit the brakes, because that cuts the power to the tranny.

And isnt the TC supposed to disengage at WOT as well? how would that be solved?

Pressurized switch. It does the switching for you when the tranny shifts into 4th.

The tranny shifts out of fourth in WOT (actually well before), thus no probs there either. You can add B&M's downshift kit to keep the tranny from downshifting at part throttle, but I've never really had the need for one myself.

You could also use a vacuum switch.

lol i need in depth explainations honestly.... *a vaccum switch* helps none at all....cause i dunno what it is, how it works, where i hook it to, where to find one.

Question.....how did Older cars with no ECM run without the TC lock uwhat about when it downshifts into third and its at WOT? the tc will still be locked up.

i think id sooner rig the TPS up to the carb and just plug the ECM back in.....

would one of you be so kind as to IM me on AIM so we dont have to clutter up the board. AspiredTwo

A good tranny shop can set it up so it locks the TCC by itself w/o the ECM.

I discussed this with a guy when I was considering a built 700r4.

They used a 4th gear pressure switch, a vacuum switch and a brake switch.

This has been discussed often on the tranny forum. Diagrams and everything. I suggest you search over there.

Drop the pan, remove the existing 4th gear clutch switch from the valve body, it's the one with only one terminal. Replace it with a GM P/N 8642473 switch. Wire a 14014519 vacuum switch between the wires to pins B and C of the factory TCC connector, and give the switch a source of ported vacuum.

yes this is how its done now.

i wasnt aware of the fact that the ECM controlled the lock up....so for a year now ive been running the car with no ecm and had no clue the ecm locked it up....thought the torque converter relyed soley on the rotating mass.....

wonder how much damage i did to the tranny (1 year old)

Anyways...i found a vaccum activated switch....specs are

"This is a normally open switch. It takes 7 pounds or more of vacuum to lock the converter and 3 pounds or less of vacuum to unlock the converter.)"

38 bucks.

now im wondering at what rpm range the TC will lock up using this.

apeiron, are both those gm part numbers?

is this a gm only part or can i get it at the local autozone?

Is this anything major i have to do with the valve body or is this real simple. im real shady of messing with the tranny (yet completly willing to rebuild a rear end or engine....and port and polish heads) ALL with no prior experiance and no physical help. all done by reading how-to's lol

GM part numbers, you'll have to go to a dealer. Changing the switch is easy, you unscrew the old one and screw the new one back in.

i'm not 100% if this was stated in here, but how do you setup to lock in 4th gear only? I'm not to worried aobut the around town driving, but 4th would be great, 40+ mph roughly, and could help keep that tranny cool. I'm in the middle of a 4th gen dash swap, have most things working, (unfortunately i think i toasted my computer) and since i have an 85, it's a cable speedo, so i need to add a later model VSS w/ buffer box for speedo to work, and probably for the Computer to see how fast the cars running. HOwever, i'm a tad curious about finding out if i can make my car's TCC lock in case everything doesn't work out...(need to tkae this car to school .... 200 miles away. still got a month to finish up.
