1" vss in a '91 firebird?

I'm doing a t5 swap from an automatic in my gta, but the tranny I got didn't come with a speed sensor. I'm guessing the smaller 1" hole is for a cable driven speedometer; the vss out of my automatic is approx. 2". Both transmissions have a red platic gear.

Do I need to replace the plastic gear with a metal reluctor wheel? Is there a vss that will fit with little or no modifcations? Part numbers would be greatly appreciated.

if it helps, final drive ratio is 2.73; wheels and tires are 245/50R16.

thanks

The T5 and the 700R4 use an entirely different VSS.

No. Yes. Get one for a 91 5spd Firebird. Duh.

If it were only that simple. the goobers at the parts counter want to know what vehicle the t5 came out of so they can order the right part, which is why I asked for a part number.

How do I find out which color of gear on the speed sensor? that way I can use the faq to find the part number.

thanks

It is that simple. I already answered you on which vehicle to buy a VSS for. I'm not being a smartass, I'm telling you exactly the application to buy for for a reason.

Colours are not consistent on speedo gears. Go by tooth count. Find an application with T5 / 2.73s (like a TBI 305 applicatino) and order for that. A VIN from someones 90-92 car setup like that would help.

When did they build GTAs with 2.73 rears?

Also - You just proved for yourself that colour of the drive gear is irrelevant.

The red in your 700-R4 is probably a 17 tooth. The red in your T5 is a 9 tooth. Yet another reason why colour matching doesn't work.

Either I'm making this too complicated or you're over simplifiying. I don't mean to be difficult; all I know is the parts guys at the GM dealership show 4 or 5 different speed sensors.

P.S. I got my GTA used and it had a 2.73 in it. When I had it worked on once, the mechanic said the rear end was out of an older F-body.

thanks

Do some searches on my user name. I had to deal with this problem whe I converted to a T-5. I ordered the VSS from a 91 camaro with a T-5. It looked identical to the auto one (2") except it had a small hole to fit into the T-5 tail housing. The speedo gears are also different from the T-5 and the 700R4's. I have to say I am pretty sure that T-5's never came stock with 2.73 rear's, they usually had 3.08's and some of the performance TPI cars got 3.42's. Knowing this, i am not sure you will be able to find speedo gears that will make your speedo read correctly. Ones for 3.08s are probably going to be the closest you will get (Red drive, Gray driven). PM me if you need anymore help.

The 4 or 5 speed sensors are for various transmissions: The 700-R4 has two different depths for the driven gear sleeve depending on the # of teeth on the driven gear. The T5 I believe has the same, although a replacement mechanical sleeve has an outer bushing which you drive in for the shorter gears. That's 4 right there. Your parts guy needs to just figure out which RPOs the different sensors go to. Two will go to an RPO that is for a T5 car. Two will go to an RPO that is for the 700-R4. Then the RPOs for different gear ratios will lead you from there.

This is why I never have problems finding parts at the dealer. I do their job for them.

Midland: I am putting new GM gears into a T5 since it's going into a 3.73 / mechanical speedo car. Odds are good I'll have a VSS left-over. I'll let you know.

I've seen 'em. They exist and the parts are available.

Are we all clear now?
