T5 probs please help!

On friday I split my bellhousing so I went and got another one. Today I spent from the time i got off work until now under the car in the driveway replacing the thing. Now I go to drive the car and it seems ok but then I notice I dont have 5th gear. It slides into the slot but there is no gear there. Also I notice there is no reverse. It wont even slide into the slot. I can't think of anything different I did but tighten a bolt on the drivers side of the tranny. I wasn't sure what it was but it was big like 13/16 or something. When i tightened it up the tranny was extremely stiff so i loosened it back off a bit and had the same prob. Is there anyway That i can fix this? Its driving me crazy and I'm trying to go out of town for the loong weekend. the bolt i messed with is on the drivers side and i believe its the only one there. Please help me out i'm goin nuts. Thanx

You're gonna have to pull and dis-assemble the trans to fix it.
That bolt held (past tense) the shift lever for reverse and fifth gears.

Yup.... There was probably nothing wrong with it until you touched it.

The big nut that goes between the driver's seat and the steering wheel backed off and came loose, and banged around under the hood. That thing can do an amazing amount of damage. Put it back where it goes, and tighten it down good, maybe use some Loctite, and hopefully it won't happen again.

There's a funky little clip that goes on the end of that "bolt", that at the very least, fell off and is now laying in the bottom of the trans; and maybe is damaged. You'll need to find it and possibly replace it while you have the trans torn apart.

All I did was tighten up that bolt lol I didn't know it could screw everything up. I dont understand what your talking about it banging around under the hood. It never came off and is on the side of the tranny. How hard is it to tear it al apart and fix? Would I be better off just gettin a new one?

Well unfortunately not knowing that it woudl screw it up, doesn't keep it from happening; but what's done is done, so now all that's left is to clean up the mess.

Big nut..... you know, that GREAT BIG ONE? Go out to your car and look at the steering wheel and the driver's seat, and see if you can figure out which nut is the one that belongs in between there.

As far as "hard to fix", I can't comment on that. I've done so many, I could do it blindfolded I think. On the other hand, brain surgery is easy for a brain surgeon, but I don't think you'd want me doing that to you.

But none of that matters. It could be as easy as falling off a log, or it could be the hardest thing ever invented by the human mind; it doesn't matter now. It's gotta be done. It's fornicated, it won't undo itself, and now you have to fix it. So don't worry about how hard it is, just find out how to do it and get started.

I would not recommend getting another trans. Fix this one.

First thing you have to do is pull the trans. Do that, and come back, and we'll tell you how to dig in there and get it done without taking any more extra unnecessary detours.

That bolt you played with is supposed to be lock-tited already so "big nuts" can't screw with it, lol.

But LowRyder, it's doubtful your trannie suffered any damage because of this, and it should be fine once you get the linkage hooked up again. It's a pretty simple fix. No worries.

Agreed...it's not likely to have damaged anything except possibly that funky clip. Someone who knows the T5 could have it apart, fixed, and put back together in an hour or so.
If you don't feel comfortable digging into it, a trans shop should be able to give you an estimate to fix it; shouldn't be more than two hours labour at the very most.
