Trans Am shifter in IROC-Z?

I am wanting to install a "T-handle" style shifter in my 85 IROC. I LOVE the look of the stock TA shifter but I need to know what parts to aquire to make the swap. Can I get away with just changing the **** or do I have to replace the entire assembly?

You need the entire shifter, they aren't the same. The good news is it is a simple swap.

The shifter **** itself is interchangeable. There is a staple type clip in the front part of the ****. Remove it with a screwdriver, then pull the **** off. Reverse the process with the T/A shifter ****.

I know with my 85 iroc the shift **** isnt held on by any staple clips. My 86 and both my 94's were. So you might just want to pick up a whole shifter assmbly off a t/a.

I replaced my T-handle **** with a camaro top button shifter on my Formula. It was a direct swap, took all of 30 seconds with a small screwdriver to pull the little clip out of the front of the handle.

I have a shifter and t-handle from a Firebird if you need to replace both units.

I just looked at the shifter I have now and I don't see a retainer clip on it so I guess I'll have to replace the whole assembly. Zepher, do you have a pic of the shifter and handle?

I can get you a pic later on tonight. It's a stock one out of a 92 Firebird that my friend and I stripped.

Will these pictures help? the first one is the newer style that has the "U" shaped clip holding the **** on and the second picture is the old style ****. Like morley said, if you want to use the new style **** it would be best to swap in the whole shifter assembly. It can be done and the shifter assembly from a trans am will fit and work in an Iroc. I know because I have one from an 86 trans am in my Iroc.

Does anyone have a tech article that gives a play-by-play of how to swap the shifters?

Four mount bolts and two cables plus adjusting the park/neutral switch afterwards and that is it.
