700r4 shifts hard..lost 4th gear
So the other day I went to leave for work and my car wouldn't shift into 2nd....After changing the filter, gaskets and fluid it will shift...but HARD...and it still won't go into 4th gear....Is it totally destroyed....I'm already buying a replacement but I would just like to know what the hell I did to it.....It won't even shift when I try to power shift it....Is the trans in my '89 computer controlled? It just sucks replacing this tranny on my 2.8 because I'm going to be building a v8 for it very soon...

Stuck TV ....
Take your TV cable loose at the throttle body or carb and do the "herky jerky" with it ....
Move it briskly back and forth as far as you can.
Be sure to pull it out against the tension of the TV spring....
Do this 8 or 10 times then reinstall the TV cable and go try it out.
This will most likely loosen the TV in the transmission and it will return to shifting properly again.
There's a really good chance this will be all it needs.
They do stick sometime...just one of those 700R4 quirks.

Most TV valves in 700r4's will eventually stick. Problem is, there is no spring to make the valve return to it's static position unless the trans has been updated by a shop or dealership.
GM recognized this problem and issued a kit with a spring to makes the valve return to static position.
You might get lucky with the cable jerk routins but it's highly unlikely.
Usually, it will require dropping the valve body and removing the valve to clean it and it's bore.
If you remove the valve body yourself, be aware that there are different quantities of check ***** in the valve body and different positions for the check ***** dependin on year and model of car.
Best to pay a tranny shop to do it unless you have a manual that shows the check ball aount and location.
While you have it apart, it's a VERY good idea to replace the thin plate between the valve body and the case. The check ***** will wear grooves in the thin plate which prevents the ***** from prperly seating in the holes. This will cause a 700r4 to shift soft when the trans fluid gets up to operating temperature.

If you have the time do a quick rebuilt first, get a manual and follow it. Aside from some basic tools like snap ring plyers it's easy. Replace the clutch packs, some seals, gaskets in the valve body, and for a small amount of time and money you can add a lot of life to it.

A rebuild kit is as much as a used tranmission + a lot more time. I was told when I bought the car that it had already been rebuilt, although that could be a lie since the old man was drunk and didn't know what he was talking about (i.e. telling me the bumper covers were made of fiberglass). I use this car for my job though, so I really need to fix it as soon as possible. I wish I could rebuild it, it would be good to learn. There is a junky used car lot in a small town where I just found an 86 with a bad 305 and good tranny for $250...So that will probably be going in the car within a year. Besides..If I had time for a rebuild I would use the time to convert the car to manual...My dad says he doesn't have the time to help me since he knows how to do everything....

Then what is wrong? No matter how warm the car gets the fluid level never moves ont he stick....Cold it's the same level as after running for 30 minutes.......I got the replacement now anyways.....I'll take the old one apart and see what was wrong now....Maybe rebuild it and sell it.....Rebuild kit is only $112 on ebay
