4th gen rear in a 3rd gen?
I know a 4th gen rear will bolt right in a 3rd gen but can you still run stock 3rd gen wheels without the tires rubbing or is the 4th gen rear too wide? Thanks for any info.

I see you're new here, so I'll let you in on something about the forums. People hate to respond to questions that have already been covered several times over. Do a search before posting a question. If you don't find the answer, then post a question. You'll be a lot more likely to elicit a response, instead of people just looking it over and ignoring it.
Here's your freebie. The rears will interchange. The 4th gen rear is about 3" wider, and the 4th gen wheels use different backspacing. The tires will stick out past the fender lips if you use 3rd gen wheels on a 4th gen rear in a 3rd gen body. This not only looks bad, but is illegal in most states. The solution is to run 4th gen wheels, or aftermarket wheels with 4th gen backspacing. Will the tires tub? Most definately.

WOW, I didn't realize it was such a big deal to answer a question. I did search for it before I posted this and I didn't find much of anything usefull. Thanks for the info. I also wanted to know if i can use the rear disc brakes from the 4th gen rear without making major modifications to my brake lines. Thanks again for any info.

It isn't a big deal, but there is a certain mentality here of which you need to be aware. I've been just as guilty as others of this on occassion. Just trying to give you a heads up.
I know there are people out there runnign 4th gen brakes. There's a tech article on the site about it. Check it out, I'm sure it will give you everything you need.

I did this to my 86 TA and found that the brakes worked but they use a different flare type. I just got an adaptor and that was that. Also the parking brake cables don't work. Just use the 4 th gen ones ( for the rear) and some extra cable and rig something up. I didn't find this to hard.

Thanks for everything. My last question is will the 4th gen gears and posi fit in my 3rd gen rear if I end up not swapping out the whole rear end?

Yeah, with a '91m you've got the 28-splien shafts just like a 4th gen. Use your axels, but the posi unit and gears will swap right in. You'll need to double check the pattern and backlash though. Try to set it up first with the factory shims and see what it looks like.
