Well at least on mine, everything bolted right up. Used the stock flywheel. Aftermarkets are available too.

I even used the same starter that came with the 305.....

are you saying to use the stock 305 flywhell? I thought the 305's were internally ballanced and I know the 400's are externally ballanced so how does this work?

Mine bolted up. But my 400 has been internal balanced w/5.7 rods.

You didn't mention anything about what kind of balance your engine had in your original post. I know there's options with externally balanced 400's but I can't think of them off-hand. I think there;s a counterwieght you can get that bolts to the flywheel, and you have to have a 400 dampener. Try searching....I've read about this before a few times.

yea mine is already built and is externally ballanced. I will try searching but I spent half the day searching before I posted lol. I could find that people had to use a special flywheel but they didn't say where to get it.

Looks like the counterweights are for flexplates. Personally, the flywheel goofnrox posted is the way I'd go...

well if it works for a flexplate then it should work for a flywheel. if it balances the crank it balances the crank, right?

Correct; they work for either.

Remember that flywheel bolts are longer than flexplate bolts, and if you're going to add that weight to verify thread engagement.

sometimes "generic" searches which return too many hits to find things easily work better with usernames. RB83L69 has tonnes of good info in his posts for example. I post lots about T56s, clutches, flywheels... Honestly when I know a topic has been hashed over several times, I just search for my username and "flywheel."
