Pulling engine

I'm attempting to pull the engine out without the transmition. I removed the cover exposing the converter and I also removed 4 bolts that appeared to be attached to the engine.

What comes next?

Chiltons says to remove the tranny crossmember, chiltons guide is also to remove the tranny. I just want to pull the engine with the least hassle possible.

Drain ALL fluids besides trans
Disconect all hoses/ wires
Disconect PS/AC from motor
unbolt the 3 or 4 torque converter bolts
Unbolt motor from trans
unbolt motor mounts
Double check all hoses/lines
pull motor up/forward/up out

Of course this is just a quick overview.

well i cant think of the exact # off hand for a SBC but there should be about 7 bolts around the outside of the trans bellhousing. The go in from the transmission and screw into the engine block. there kinda hard to see but not to bad.

I failed to mention it is an automatic transmission. Do I have to remove the converter to see the bolts you are talking about?

sounds to me you have a few more bolts between trans and engine.

I have 6 holding trans to engine.
I have 3 holding converter to flexplate(v8 may have more)

May want to atleast loosen the trans crossmember bolts, cause you need engine to come forward to come away from trans. But engine wont go forward tell after it clears motor mounts, which need to come up.

If you have a 700r4, their may be a bracket system running along right side of oil pan holding the lines that go to the radiator.

Edit, yes you need to remove that bottom dust cover to gain access to tq bolts.

Also support the front of the trans some how, cause when engine/trans seperate, its just going to flop down, breaking and/or bending something.

Yeah and GOOD LUCK getting the motor back in with the tranny sitting there. Its usually easier just to yank the tranny out with the motor and then split them on the ground.

will it be easier just to yank them both out at the same time?

like i said, i'm a first timer just trying to figure out the easiest way to do this.

I pulled my v6 with the trans in the car. Coming out wasnt to bad. Going back in I did have a bit of problems. But 3 people managed to do it.

I couldnt see an easy way pulling all together since the car is unibody and front core-support cant be removed like my s10 was. I know it can/has been done, but I didnt.

I think it's easier to pull the tranny with the engine (although I've never done them separately). When I was doing mine at school, my shop teacher wouldn't even let me think about leaving the tranny in. He has had many frusterating experiences trying to get them back together with the tranny still in the car.

yet another vote for yanking them together.... this is still a commodious enough engine bay to pul both together. you have 6 bolts holding your tranny onto the motor..... put the bottom 2 back in.

next, unbolt the tranny from the x-member, and the x-member from the car. (make sure the tailshaft is supported).

remove the distributor cap and rotor.

unbolt the motor mounts.

start lifting up, the just before you touch the firewall, pull the hoist towards you. up some more. keep doing this until you clear the mounts. then, up, up, and away, all the while point the tranny down, until you clear the core support. (yuou may have to inch the hoist back farther and farther to help gie room as you hoist the motor up.)

any questions, let us know. this can be done easily, and you'l find it's much easier to do it while it's all together. TRUST me.
