New Rear Axle Sounds

I just swapped my 2.73 differential rear end with a 3.73 posi. Everything is good and smooth, but it will make a howling noise when I drive it now. But, there is no noise when I let off the gas. The howling is most noticable around 45mph and will get quieter when I go faster/slower than that. Does anyone know what might be the problem? Thanks

need help

So, tonight I was driving around 35mph and I hear a noise, so I turn down the stereo. A couple seconds later, there's this huge clunk that came from the back of the car. I slow way down and it does it again, so I stop. I get out and look underneath the car, but there is nothing unusual. I put it in nuetral and push it to a less busy street.

I think it's something wrong with the new rear end. I was less than 2 miles from my parking lot, so I figured I'd just go very very slow. In any gear, the car would move about a foot and then clunk and keep doing this. In nuetral it would coast without clunking.

To make a long story short, I was too cheap to have it towed, so me and a friend pushed it half way back and then a cop showed up and he pushed with the cop car the rest of the way.

My guess is that maybe the gears were too tight (the cause of the howling) and one or more teeth broke off a gear. Could anyone help me out here? Thanks.

This is the new rear end that I put on:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...RK%3AMEWA%3AIT

It seemed like a good deal since $400 was the best price for a posi at the local junk yards. Kind of sucks that I'll have to go tear it apart again and throw some more money into it.

What am I looking at spending if it turns out to be a broken pinion gear tooth?

new transmission problems to go along..

I might be just talking to only myself, but at least it keeps my problems fresh in my mind. I swapped the rear axle with the broken teeth, with the original 2.73 differential axle. Everything went smoothly and I got it back in.

During the test drive, the rear is good, but now I have lost drive and overdrive in my 700R4. It only shifts into first and second gear. We checked the cables going into the tranny to make sure they didn't come un-hooked, but everything seemed to be in place. Tomorrow, I'll probably call some transmission shops to see what the problem might be, but I figured I'd give this place a try first.

It's unlikely that the initial clunk of the driveshaft had anything to do with it, but I don't know. Please, anyone have any theories on what could be wrong with the transmission?

That's the thing, I was going about 35mph and not doing anything agressive. So, I don't know if the rear end failure somehow caused it or it just died at the same time. I'm going to take it to a transmission shop now, so hopefully they can tell me what the problem is.

I was previously wrong. During the test drive after putting in the original axle, I had thought I lost drive and OD. Driving it again, I realized that the only gear I have is 1st.

I took it to the shop and a mechanic drove it and his best guess is that a valve might be stuck in the tranny. If they find crap in the pan, however, the clutches are probably burnt. So, it would be nice if it is just a valve.

Sounds like he's setting you up for a full rebuild. If all the trans has is 1st and reverse, and it happened all of the sudden, 99% of the time it is the $9 governor gear. Throw in an hour of labor (max) and you'll be out the door. . .

RBob.

....Unless there is a lot of clutch Material in your trans pan..

The governer gear fixed my previous trans only temporarily.. When i pulled the pan, the fluid was gray.

But, if you can't afford it, and the governer is stripped, put a new governer in, and drive the car nicely, and i mean really nice until you can afford to swap a trans or do a rebuild.

Good luck man..

Thanks a lot RBob for suggesting the governor gear. That's what was wrong with it and I got it fixed for $60. You guys really know your stuff. =)
