Tranny cooler reccomendations....

what tranny cooler do yall reccommend. i see alot of them go for 50 to 200 bucks and wondering what size and brand you think would be best

i recently took my car on a long road trip to my friends camp and it was alot of up and down hills. bout an hour and a half drive and 2800 stall lock up with 2.77 gears, it didnt really like that too much. i think it got pretty hot cuz it started to act funny on me. seemed like the converter wasnt locking up when it should have and kinda worried me.

so i thought i would get a cooler. my converter is a 9.5inch edge with 2800stall. tranny is fresh rebuilt for 450hp or so and shift kit.

any advice is appreciated

Hayden all the way! What ever kind you get, just be sure and get a "header" type design...they are the most efficient.

I have no experience installing them. Do you have to modify or cut anything?

Thanks

you only have to cut one of the steel cooling lines at the radiator and run hoses to it. the cooler mounts to the front of the radiator. very quick and easy install.

Nope, you don't have to cut a thing, if you bypass the factory cooler in the rad. Back when I had an automatic trans I put in a hayden on my pro-built 700r4. I bypassed the factory cooler and ended up covering half the hayden with cardboard just so the trans would get up to operating temp. With the cooler uncovered, the trans wouldn't even get to 140 degrees unless I was beating on it......the hardest part is figuring out how to mount the cooler....Hayden's come with a good amount of mounting hardware so it's really not that tough.

I gotta B&M Supercooler (dunno the part number off my head...) but it came with everything to install it, even had the right fittings to connect to the factory hard cooler lines and radiator. Although, like a dumbass I punctured a hole in a radiator's factory trans cooler while installing it. Typically you'd wanna keep the factory cooler in conjunction with aftermarket one but I'm running just the B&M cooler and havent had any problems...

Is that bad for the tranny to run that cool?

another thing that might help is the oil cooler of a 86-91 rx7

prolly a good 18 inches or so long, 4-5 inches tall and about 1 1/2 to 2 inches deep

they also have a bypass pellet in them to help let things flow through when they are cold though I'm sure you would have to play with spring pressure a little being it was setup for engine oil cooling not transmission oil

but also being these aren't the tube and fin style but rather the plat style like a radiator they are quite a bit more efficient

and fairly cheap to boot. plus shoudn't be that hard to come thorugh one.

I knowthey are a common swap to MANY other cars as an oil cooler because they are a very good efficient design and I'm sure they can be played with to do tranny duty

Yes it is......I was wondering that myself and I spoke to Dana on the phone about it a few years ago and he told me it is almost just as bad for a trans to run too cool as it is for it to run too hot. It really shortens the life of the trans quite a bit.

RX7....good info, thanks for passing that along!

found a picture and after looking at them I think my dimensions are way off. look at feet in bottom of pic or the little wrench over toe the left side for size reference
but then again it has been a while since I have been under my car since it is broke down at a friends house right now

and ebay has a few right now in the $10-25 range

I would definately get a gauge....if you don't have one, you are kinda flying blind. I found that I didn't even need the factory cooler anymore once I put the Hayden in.

this is why i kept the lines running to the cooler in the radiator. it gets the tranny up to op temp quicker but the hayden keeps it from getting too hot.
