When buying any converter you always get what you paid for. An inexpensive converter will never be a good performance converter.
A 9" converter can stall higher easier than a 10" converter with the same stall speed. For the 10" to stall at the same high speed, it needs to slip more. The more a converter slips, the more heat it generates.
My current converter is a JW 8" race converter that I paid $1200 Canadian for quite a few years ago. I had it rebuilt locally last year for a couple of hundred bucks. When it's time for another rebuild, I can get a 9" made locally for about $1000 that will be stronger than the 8" and give the same stall speed.
Externally an 8, 9 and 10" converter will look the same. The external dimensions are all 10". The 8 and 9" will have the smaller parts on the inside of the housing.

I ran the Jegs unit for 2 years with great results. very cheap (big plus back then), flashed to 3600 (rated for 3500), and very cery consistent and repeatable in the 1/4mi as far as mph was concerned with no excessive slipping. It was the ideal street/strip convertor and would have no problem buying one again. I believe TCI manufacturers the Jegs convertors anyways.
