Clanging/banging noise

Driving home from work yesterday, I noticed a clanging/banging noise. As I got closer to home, the car sounded like an air chisel and was very loud. I pulled the driveshaft and the u-joints are tight. I think it is the pinion gear. Rear is a 9 bolt. Won't make the noise in neutral, but as soon it is in gear and give it gas, the clanging starts and goes in time with the revs. What do you guys think is the problem?

My ten bolt did the same thing. I've never seen it on a 9bolt, but it sounds like it knocked a couple of teeth off either the ring or pinion gears. I know the Pinion bearings get worn, and the 9bolt is succeptable to damage from excessive backlash. I'd pull the cover and see what you got. If its toast, look on 9bolt.com. They have a lot of stuff for them.

Could it possibly be the torque converter?? The noise is barely noticeable while coasting, just underload like accelerating and a little bit while stopped and pushing on the brake. What are the symptoms of a failed torque converter?

Are you sure it is not the engine it's self? I had a 305 that started to clank one day and sounded similar to what you are saying. Same symptoms to as far as it was not to bad until i tryined t stop and under power (which you could here it echo off the lake) Still have the block but have not pulled the oil pan yet.. always have wondered what happened to te bottom end lol

I don't think it is the engine, but then again I don't know for sure. Revving the engine in neutral, it sounds normal.

oh. well if it sounds normal in nuetral i am not sure.. hm. Never heard of a tranny making a clangy sound before though.. except unless you broke the teeth off a gear or broke a shaft. Wait come to think on it. i do remember that a converter made noise once. took it off and the ears that fit into the input shaft were broken off (into the input shaft area) so perhaps it is the TC

Pulled off the cover today and I broke a couple of teeth of the pinion gear. Anybody got any advice on how to replace it?

Check and make sure your TC is tight on the flexplate.

They make some horrible noises whenever they are loose or missing a bolt.

On a bad note....my car has been making some nasty sounds lately...from the transmission. And today my 2nd 700r4 went south. Hope you have better luck.
