Need help immediately, tranny won't shift past 2nd
I recently, adjusted my TV cable wrong about 4 days ago and tried readjusting it... in total i traveled maybe 5 km's with my tv cable wrongly adjusted... my tranny even started to smoke and leak for a bit. I went to my buddies who had a camaro and he set it up properly i think... it worked very good after this. But today my tranny worked good in the morning and i just went for a drive and my tranny quit shifting when left in overdrive or drive but if i put it in 2 it shifts fine from 1 to 2 but then put it in drive and it will rev forever and not engage the tiniest bit. Overdrive will rev to 3,00rpm but kinda send some power to the wheels. Can someone post or point me in the right direction for adjusting the TV cable, i have the haynes manual but it sucks. Also any feeedback on possible thoughts of the problem would be great... i think im gonna check the linkages/cables later. I don't wanna get a new tranny right now if i don't have too since id on't have the money but if i have too, what would you guys recommend, I wanna stay with the 700r4 for money reasons. I have a 1990 Iroc with 350 and 700R4. Thanks in advance, sorry but the long post.

Hate to tell ya but your 3-4 clutch bands are fried. Transmission is gone. I have had 2 700r4's do this. Actually my second one just did this sunday. I ordered a TCI street fighter th350 today. Hopefully I never have to worry about it again.

I have to agree with g_roc on this one. The trans is on its way out. Eventually you won't get any upshift, unless you realy babby it, and then finally none at all regardless of what you do. The 700R4 in my Z28 did the same thing.
I'd go with a Pro-Built 700R4 if you want to stay with the 700R4. I've got one and love it. From a cost standpoint though, it is probably cheaper to swap in a built TH350.

Do you have the tools (or the friends) to change the trans yourself? You could get a junkyard 700r4 and put it in... that would be the cheapest way. Check the fluid in the junkyard 700r4 before you buy it, and try to get at least an '87 700r4, the newer the better.

I'm distrustful of junkyard transmissions. I've seen plenty that had cherry red fluid and were junk. A lot of the time it seems that a fluid and filter change was tried as a last ditch effort before sending the car off to its final resting place.
Also, you usually don't have nay idea how long the car was sitting there. Condensation inside the trans can cause corrosion in the accumulator and servo bores, which can cause the trans to go bad in short order, and typically it cannot be rebuilt because the case is damaged.
If you go the junkyard route just be sure to get a warranty. Even so, it's a lot of effort ot have to pull the trans again when you find out it doesn't work. Then you have to go back to the junkyard to get your money back, or an exchange (where you've got the same odds it will be trash too).
Just my $0.02. If you're in a pinch sometimes you've got to do what you've got to do, but if you can pony up the green up front you'll be bucks ahead in the long run.

I bought a used 700r4 last time. It had low miles and a trans-go kit. I swapped it in...which is a PITA. One year later it went out again. So I spent today getting it out and whatnot.
I had to get a loan for my tranny and TC. I hate being in debt but I also hate swapping trannys. I would recommend getting a good transmission for a good company. Will save you a lot of time and effort in the long run.

Amen brother. It seems like everything I do now is built on credit. I save up as much as I can and then just finacne the rest. When that project is paid off I move on to saving up for the next one. I used to just do everything with cash, but once you get married and buy a house that just isn't an option anymore. I guess once I retire in about forty years I'll go back to paying cash for everything. My kids will be out of school and the house will be paid off. By then I'll be leaving on the first amber because my reaction time will be so slow!
