Servo snap ring won't go on

I tried installing a corvette servo but the unit will not go down far enough to see the snap ring grove. I applied a pry bar and tried to punch one side of the ring in to get it started but there is just not enough space to get the ring started! How far does the shaft have to go in the trans tunnel? I also tried to put the old one back on and that won't go on either. What I'm I doing wrong?

Is it the spring tension that is keeping you from pushing the cover on? Or is something binding? Because if it is the first question, they make a tool specifically made for installing that cover without fighting with it. It is an "L" shaped bracket, one end will bold to one of the transmission pan bolts, then the "L" shape comes up in front of the cover and has a tapped hole in it with a long bolt. You tighten that bolt to push the cover on, then install the snap ring. I made my own tool for this, with a piece of angle I then welded a 3/8 nut on one end and use a long 3/8 bolt to push on the cover, the other end simply bolts onto a pan bolt. It works pretty good and only took about 10 minutes to make it. Hope that gives you some ideas, Larry.

Sounds like something is hanging up. I use hand pressure to install the snap ring when on the bench.

Servo cover tool

http://www.jamesmorton.com/products/wood/Tradesmen.php

Check out the above link. I use a 4"x20" clamp to press in
servo covers, and it works great. And it was less than $20US.

Still can't get it in I used a pry bar and pushed right up against the middle of the cover and it still will not go far enough to even see the snap ring groove. Also when I tried to take the whole assembly out again the servo didn't have the spring action it had when I put it on. I was like I was pushing down on it too hard and made it get stuck! How far does the shaft have to go in? I notice that there is 2 surfaces on the shaft that looks like it slides back and forth on but only the first portion of the shaft goes in not the second part after the cut out area with a hole in it if you know what I'm talking about.

It may be that the first spring has fallen off. This is the spring on the end of the pin that goes into the trans first. I had a lot of trouble making sure it stayed in place.

When (not if) it falls off it lays in the bottom of the servo bore and prevents the whole line up from going in far enough. It is the downward angle that causes it to fall off.

Only advice I can give to keeping it in place is to be careful when placing the line up into the servo bore. Keep it tipped back so that the spring doesn't fall off. Some petroleum jelly may help hold it in place.

RBob.

No I got the spring to go on fine and the rest of the servo to go in the shaft tunnel. It like I'm missing about 1/8 travel just enough not to see the snap ring groove. So I'm going to take the whole tranny out and see what I can do.

To keep the spring in place 👍 (though I think fishing line would work better as it's thinner)

Place a string or fishing wire (preferably) through the spring and the little hole in the shaft of the servo assembly as shown (no knots, just a line through it).
Once it's in place (holding onto the 2 ends of the string as shown) carefully pull one side of the string until the string comes out 👍

Did you make sure that the outer part has the long end facing the cover?

Looks like a darn good trick. Even better that the OP never came back and stated what his issue & fix was.

And yes, I like the idea of using mono-filament line. Thinner and more slippery.
